Richmond Generating Station

This is it. The grand-daddy of power plants.

Richmond has been one of my top bucket list locations ever since I first fell in love with it back in the beginning. The first time we were in the area and tried going here, we wound up at Delaware station which is not far from here. We were walking up to the doors just as the construction company arrived that morning to do demolition work. So we left in failure and moved on to other locations. By the time I realized we were at the wrong plant, it was too late to go back.

This time was my last chance, ever. Demolition had just started. It took three separate attempts but I finally got inside.. at night.. just as a storm began.. so that was fun.

ALSO

This is my 28th post of the year which means 2025 was my blog's most prolific year ever.

We are at the precipice of a monumental anniversarial occasion. STAY TUNED

Video of Richmond Generating Station

This place was an all-time bucket list location for me and the word on the street was it should be fairly easy now that demolition was going on. I found that to not be the case.

It took me three separate attempts on a trip for which I wasn't supposed to be anywhere near Philadelphia. I really had to get creative and go out of my way to make it happen but I knew this was my last chance, so I was fucking determined. The first two attempts ended in failure and extreme disappointment. My last attempt was basically a hail mary situation; it was already 6pm by the time I began and I had already been up for 12 hours, had explored two other power plants that same day and drove a couple hours to get back here.

The icing on the cake was that by the time I finally made it inside, the sky exploded. With one single, crazy loud, boom of thunder which came out of nowhere, a torrent of rain came crashing down and the wind was blowing hard.

I don't want to reiterate the whole story that I already wrote up on the blog, but yeah.. It was a wild time. I was kind of stunned and feeling defeated but decided to just start filming anyway. At about 34 seconds in the video you can hear a chunk of the roof crash on the ground.

I had to "dodge" the shadows pretty hard in the photos and video to try to make it look fairly well-lit but it was dark when I started and pitch black by the time I left.

! ! ! MAJOR NEWS EVENT ! ! !

Greetings comrades and welcome to this MAJOR NEWS EVENT.

The greatest blog in the world which you know and love unconditionally has undergone its biggest transformation EVER.

I am pleased to announce that I have completed re-writing the code from top to bottom and have MOVED IT ENTIRELY AWAY FROM GOOGLE'S BLOGSPOT to a fully self-hosted platform.

The best thing about this is that it LOOKS 99% EXACTLY THE SAME. That's right, ladies and gentlemen: I toiled laboriously to make an old-school blog on a modern platform and it was NOT easy. I could have clicked a few buttons and been done many tedious hours ago, but I hated all the themes that are available. And frankly there is no better blog layout than what I already perfected here.

The main difference is the menu. I couldn't reverse engineer blogspot's proprietary menu/code system and I couldn't find any code snippets/templates that matched that old school style of menu. What I found and successfully modified instead was, in my opinion, a fine substitute.

NEW FEATURES

There aren't many new features because I wanted it to be as identical as possible. But there are two worth mentioning:

1. PINCH TO ZOOM. On the blogspot platform, you cannot pinch to zoom without first clicking on the photo which opens in a new tab. On the new site, you can zoom to your heart's content.

2. MENU BEHAVIOR. This is both a feature and a bug I'm working to fix eventually. On the blogspot platform, in order to navigate the main archive menu, you have to click on each month to open its contents. There is no way to open them all at once. FEATURE: On the new site, you only have to click on each year's heading and it opens up the full year. BUG: I haven't yet figured out how to keep the menu open to the selected year once you click on a post. Upon clicking a post, the menu rests to closed. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it makes navigating a little disorienting sometimes. Based on the type of code implemented in its design, I'm 99% sure it can be modified to stay open through clicks, but I haven't gotten there yet. And whether the menu can automatically be opened to the year relative to a certain post is yet to be determined but that's a much less functionally necessary item. Also, when I make a new post, I have to manually add the relevant menu links. I have no idea how to automate that.

3. SMARTPHONE FRIENDLY. The old one was already pretty damn responsive in terms of tiny phone screens, but one of the most obvious things I never bothered to fix was the background stretch/squish that occurred. I could have fixed that years ago but I didn't care and I still don't frankly. However, during the process of redoing the entire structure and code of the site, I spent the extra 5 minutes to finally fix the background. In general, I've taken great pains to ensure it works/renders optimally across all screen sizes. There's a few little details I'm still finishing up such as font sizes but it's perfectly usable now.

That's about the gist of it.

For now, the old blog is back to its original address at https://sublunarphotography.blogspot.com while the new one is live at https://sublunarphoto.com. I'm currently working to redirect all the old links to the new one and by the time I'm done the old blogspot version will no longer be accessible.

I realize how incredibly sentimental we all are towards the OG blogspot blog so please take some time to process and grieve accordingly. But also to celebrate the fact that we've broken free from google and the constraints it had on the form and function of the blog. But even with the removal of such constraints, I don't plan to ever change it too drastically because I think it's already perfect as it is.

Lastly, this 1.0 version of the new self-hosted blog is entirely HTML/CSS with only the necessary background PHP for the database/comments. I have ZERO plugins installed currently. This is a pure hard coded site which I built from the old one using only windows notepad text files.

Meet the new blog, same as the old blog (mostly):

More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

But seriously, congrats on staying an explorer this whole time, rather than retire like so many of us have.

Thanks. It's been challenging. And weird. But I can't imagine ever not doing this to some degree.

I'm not sure what normal people even do with their lives. Every vacation I go on is influenced by what's on my map and every business trip I've taken forms the basis of a new research project covering a given area. It causes me to research history and learn stuff about reality which is both interesting and rewarding and it keeps me in shape while also motivating me to stay in shape when I might otherwise sit in front of a computer all day. I've found that I crave filth and discomfort. I feel like I go stir crazy if I don't regularly get out and crawl around in the dirt and bleed and get miserable and exhausted.

There's a whole world of cool old stuff out there and as long as I am physically capable of exploring it, I don't see an alternative. There's still so much to see and do after 20 years. I mean, I've still never even been to Europe.

I feel ya. In Sp, Su, Fa I pickleball 4 days a week, but in Wi it drops to one day and it drives me crazy! Always take a mental hit.

I was the Europe once in the mid-90's on a 2 week bus tour. I ought to digitize some of my photos. There was a really cool ww2 artillery cannon rusting away behind the hotel I stayed at in Switzerland.

Lake Moraine Hydroelectric Power Plant

This is one of the most obscure, longest-abandoned, difficult to access, almost completely forgotten locations I've ever had the pleasure of digging up out of the ether. Even the Colorado comrades didn't seem to know anything about this one.

I first caught a whiff of this location while deep in a late night researching binge and I had no idea whether I would ever find it, let alone see it for myself. And it's been on my scheduled list of blog entries for so long that it almost feels weird to finally have it posted.

I am honored to have the privilege of re-introducing the world to the Lake Moraine Hydroelectric Power Plant, over 115 years after it was abandoned on the south slope of Pike's Peak in Colorado.

Hell yeah dude.
