Caves in Hermann?
So I overheard a cashier talking about some underground caves in Hermann with another cashier. I tried to get more info but she was (and always is) a bitch so I failed. I tried to do a google search but failed there too. Anyone here know anything?

RE: Caves in Hermann?
I am not familiar with any caves. I work in Hermann every other weekend, so I will ask around next time.
On another note, I would give my left kidney to have access to some of the buildings. Not just in Hermann, but also the surrounding towns like Bay and Berger. Anybody explored these places?

What is right along the river to the west of Hermann? Along Sand Plant Road? Appears to be a sand pit or something? Maybe mine/cave?
RE: Caves in Hermann?
South bank or north bank of the river? There is a sand plant that extracts sand from the Missouri river and piles it on the north bank. This operation is north and about a half mile downstream from Hermann.

There's a sand plant on Sand Plant Road? That's creative naming right there.

I have two good books on the Hermann area and neither makes mention of any caves. There were a fair number of arched cellars constructed, with the largest ones being at Stone Hill. And there was even a small lime quarry in town. The CD from the state also doesn't list any in that area.
Berger is not a bad town/area to explore. Lots of history there and in between on the way to New Haven. The fields down by Etlah are where Pinckney Bend was, and to this day the wreck of the Spread Eagle is still buried out there. Bay, on the other hand, doesn't have much left, and what's there is largely residential these days.

RE: Caves in Hermann?
Mandi sent ya a message on caves.
RE: Caves in Hermann?
There is also, the old factory (I think?) ten minutes west of Hermann on 100. It is at the confluence of the Missouri and Gasconade rivers. Old, old brick buildings. One of my co-workers mentioned it was used to manufacture steamboats. Somewhere on this forum there is a discussion about it, but I am without the will and time to search.

I believe SubLunar and Rosie Cheecks checked out the Stone Hill cellars once. I'd love to.
When I lived in Missouri, I'd go through Hermann almost every weekend and really like the town.

That's the Gasconade Boat Works. Lots of history. There is still periodic Corps of Engineers activity there, and the locals eye any new vehicle with suspicion. But it would not be hard to get in and explore.critter wrote:There is also, the old factory (I think?) ten minutes west of Hermann on 100.
