Picher, Oklahoma
Not sure if anyone has been to Picher, Oklahoma. The main road that goes through Picher still has traffic on it, mainly due to people heading to the casino's in Miami, Ok. However, off on the side roads of towns you will see many abandoned houses. On the main road some houses appear that people may still live there or at the very least utilize the houses for storage.
Many of the abandoned houses have doors left wide open or broken windows on the side roads.
Some government clean up was done, but it is spilling over past the fences next to the road again. Ther also is an aboanded gas station on the main road as well.

Yes, its a bad deal. There is another town near Picher called treece (attached to picher---look for a tiny sign), that does have quite a few people living there.
RE: Picher, Oklahoma
there are actually a few people still living in picher. even in the run down houses. I go through there on a daily basis to get to work and back. It sucks picher was never really beautiful as far as i can remember but it had a lot of nice people in it.

I agree with you that people are definately staying in some of the houses. I have noticed this, especially when i used to go through that way to go to the casinos.

I would say one of the better things we did in Picher is go Geocaching. It's a relatively safe way to see parts of the town and learn quite a bit of what happened in different places. There are also some of the chat piles that have different formations in them that look like various things, and some of them are referenced in the geocache listings.
I have heard that it's relatively safe (as in security, not health) to explore the chat piles, but stay away from the private property areas. That might get you shot. I never had the urge to wash my hands so strong as directly after leaving that area.

Yeah a cop used to always sit at that 4 way stop. But I don't see him there anymore since they pulled the stop signs and made it a 2 way stop.

RE: Picher, Oklahoma
I lived in Baxter Springs for a couple years (moved back to joplin this year) and I loved going through Picher at night. There are some duplexes right off the road and one of them was damn near the only light in town. The tornado really sealed the deal for Picher

Re: Picher, Oklahoma
Just an update, almost all of the buildings have been torn down as of about this time last year. There wasn't very much left at all, and most of the roads are only noticeable because of the odd fire hydrant or lamp post base here and there. It wasn't totally gone, but it was getting there.
