Caves in Rolla/Waynesville Area

Post by azr3al »

Been a long time explorer of caves in the Rolla/Waynesville area, but never found an outlet to find them, besides word of mouth. Searching on google and I found this site. Holy cow its the holy grail! Lol.

I've been to 1 cave in Vida, 3 caves in Newburg, 1 in edgar springs and 1 in flat.

I'm trying to find more caves in the area, and to share locations of caves that I have been to. So if anyone knows of any intermediate level caves in my area, please feel free to reply or PM.

Thanks in advance. I'm very pumped to find some new caves.

Go online and check out some good topographic maps. Not only will you find some caves marked, but you can figure out cave locations indirectly if you look at maps closly.

Examples:

If you see a Spring labled that has a Cave in the name, like "Jone's Spring Cave" then go to that location, odds are that you'll find a cave.

Any good topo map will also show the names of hollows and valleys. If you find a valley labled "Cave Hollow" then go explore, there is probably a cave.

Check out the names of smaller private roads. If you find a road labled "Cave View Road", go check it out, there is a probably a cave.

I was tinkering with the USGS map.

Any better ones to use?

Also, the Caves of Missouri book. I found the text only version (searchable). But does someone have a copy of the one with images? I could not find a proper link anywhere on the site.

Again, thanks for the replies!

Is the Kraft cave/ roubidoux cave/Indian cave located off of hwy 17 in Waynesville? I've seen a cave on the right side of the road, north on 17 a mile or two, right before you cross over a bridge.

[Moderator Edit: Location]

It's about right here.

Anyone ever seen the itty bitty cave in the east bound I44 road cut between J highway and Arlington I think it is? It a small opening on the north side of the lane. It's on the part of I44 that is on a downward angle toward the bridges. I think it's here.http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=37 ... 9&t=k&z=16

That reminds me...

Just to the east of Gerald, MO on US50 there is a small cave right alongside of the road. Streetview even shows it here.

I'm not much for small dark places, but I have seen a few trucks parked there and guys exploring it. Not sure what's in there....but it's easly accessible.

So... got a list of caves to visit now.

-Piquet Cave, have to find contact info on owner, or just drive up.
-Marcellus Cave
-Lamar Cave
-Kraft Cave, again, owners permission
-And 2 other various caves we heard about via word of mouth.

Thank you guys :D. My weekend is full now.

I know the location to a nice cave. Need repelling gear to further explore one area of it, so I have no idea how deep it goes. Don't know the name yet, haven't done any research. Lough gps location is 37.903913,-91.992302, but I can pinpoint it if anyone is interested....

I have always wondered if that roadside cave on I-44 has any depth to it. It is along the east-bound lane as you head up the hill. I noticed rocks are placed in an attempt to cover the entrance, so my assumption would be that it does extend further than typical road-cut crevices.
