thetrio was replying to ze_beeved whom mentioned a tunnel in the Raytown area. However, you were right. The pictures caver posted are in Idaho.

I wish we had landscapes like that in KC. :(

A good resource for the state of Arkansas is the historical 1936 county map archive on the Arkansas highway department website. Here's the link:
http://www.ahtd.state.ar.us/Maps/Counti ... lMapst.htm

The Carroll County map, for instance, shows the abandoned tunnel northeast of Eureka Springs. It's actually marked "TUNNEL".

You'll have to download a TIF reader, I use Brava Reader (www.bravaviewer.com/reader.htm).

I was reffering to the one ze_beeved talked about.
I went over to the dark side, but just to pick up a few things.

Hey everyone. Bugo referred me to a tunnel in Conway I never knew about. I went and checked it out today and it was pretty cool. Here's the link to my findings. . .

I remembered another rail tunnel in the region: through Backbone Mountain south of Pocola, OK (near Fort Smith, AR). I haven't been to the tunnel but it shows up on many maps of the area. As far as I know, this is the only tunnel south of the Arkansas River in the area.

Here's an excerpt from the Oklahoma DOT's LeFlore County map, the tunnel is circled in blue:

Very cool. I like how the rock in the tunnel is visibly different from the rock in the Cricket tunnel.

Indeed. This one (unlike the Cricket tunnel) had plenty of room inbetween the walls and the track too. It would kick ass to sit against the walls in this one while a train went blowing through it. But as a disclaimer, I don't suggest it.

If I can ever get a handle on when the train going north goes through there, I'm totally going to jump on a train at Cricket and ride it to about Reeds Spring, or maybe Crane.

If I hear on the news that someone got hurt or arrested for jumping a train around that area, I'll know it's you!
