Thermal spots around Solo

Post by radguy »

We took a short drive up into the National Forest northwest of Solo in Pope County to check out some thermal hot spots my wife's father told us about. He said when he was younger this area was slightly raised above flat, now the area is sunken and some of the area actually has open holes. Our place of interest was free of snow with temperatures on contact as hot as 80 degrees while the surrounding area was in the mid 20s. You can move some of the lager rocks and feel hot air flowing from the cracks.

Wow that's really cool rad. Are there any known hot springs around there? Find any caves?
Btw I'm a douche. That is all...

No hot springs that I'm aware of. Guessing there is a cave underneath this area. Could not find anything though.

Hey, do you think you could give me more precise or exact directions to this place? It would be neat to kick around in the area and find something.

Related: One of my college Remote Sensing professors was working on using satellite thermal imagery to find possible cave locations. This was about a decade ago. I never heard what became of the project.

Side note: She was a horrid bitch.
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

I have wondered about attaching a small FLIR camera to a drone. Would be a fairly cheap way and productive way to find caves if it could detect thermal changes on the ground from 150-200ft.

The new Mavic II Enterprise version can come with a FLIR camera.

It'll cost ya though.

$3K!

I can't help but feel duct tape could solve this issue for less.

I saw the Enterprise edition. It's pretty nifty.

I have a Mavic Pro myself and it's quite the aid in exploring places.
