Railway exchange building

Post by Shemp72 »

Anyone got info on accessibility or if it's worth a shot at entry?

No, I believe he's referring to the other railway exchange building. That one we just call the Cottonbelt Depot.

When it was still active but on the downward spiral, I rigged one of the doors to the loading docks to stay open temporarily. But I never went back to check it that night like I planned. Aside from that I have no current information on accessibility.

edit: looks like it's not totally vacant anymore. And being on the 21st floor, that might take the fun out of potential rooftopping opportunities.

I remember from when Macy's was still open that the elevators were beautiful.
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

I was talking about the Railway Exchange building. I've drove by the Cottonbelt Depot building before but have not been inside.

I'm very curious about this area right here though, right up the street from the depot.

Quickly glancing at your link I believe that would be the Greyhound bus terminal. Would LOVE to get in there, but it's been sealed every time I've tried it. But it has been a while since I tried it last.. Odds are it would fill up with homeless as soon as an obvious entry was made so I would hope to find a way in that requires some extra effort, something out of the way. So yes, that deserves investigation.

There is a sign on the side that mentions something about tickets, so that sounds right. The Google Street View features an interesting cast of characters. There is at least one broken window, but it's in front and would require climbing. Given the location, being seen is pretty much a given.

I typically can only get out a few times a month and missing a chance sucks. I get to do a lot of scouting as I'm on the road for work all the time, but that just makes my list of places to go longer.

Bump.

I had a long sordid history in this building. It’s not nearly as tall in the center as it seems from the skyline view. Floor 9 or 10 possibly was the extent of the full floors. Above that was perimeter only construction. If you look via satellite view you’ll see what I mean. Try getting a crane to put something on floor 9 that has to cross floor 18. If you do, you are better at rigging than I.

Author of St. Louis 365, a calendar book called this the first building in the world to take up an entire modern city block. Even now I find that to be a very bold claim. But if anyone hadn’t experienced it during the Famous Barr days you missed out. There were 8 floors of shopping retail space. Each escalator you ascend the further up you go was older than the last. There was even a not so secret lunch spot that was amazing on the second floor tucked away inside Famous that you didn’t know was there unless you were looking for it.

I have very fond memories of this building and could tell them but nobody would believe me. Story of my life.
