Rappeling into Caves

Post by jammer_smith »

So I rappeled down into Minch Cave last night, and finaly got to mark it blue on my Cave Map. I realize that I need to developed some upper body strenght, or buy an ascender, cause getting back out sucked a bit.

That is the second cave I've rappeled into, and I realize...rappeling is freaking awesome. So where around here can you do it?

It is my understanding that the climbing gyms wont let you use your own belay and rappel yourself down, to dangerous I guess? Also only a couple of parks in the state allow it, and only with a special use permit.

So does anyone on here climb? Where would you go rappel?

There is a bluff off Old Limey Road where I have seen people rappelling. Of course, it's marked no trespassing.

I checked it out from googlemaps birds eye view. It looks pretty cool. Is that cave too difficult to find? A cave that was up in a bluff face taht required rappeling to get to would be freaking cool. But with the way caves are formed that is rarely the case. Not impossible, but rare.

Old Limey is a great easy rappel. Good anchor points, clean bluff, and not too high. Also, the kick-off point declines at a slight angle before the cliff goes vertical. The start of the rappel is simple.

Nine years ago, last time I was there, my inattentiveness caused a mishap and I broke my leg, foot, and degloved the skin on my right hand.

Don't forget to tie a proper knot. What about just rappeling from the mouth of some caves around here? Like skylight or old Spanish or jamb up?

A friend of mine got a new harness and ascending rig. So We are heading out to Skylight cave to the big sink entrance to rappel off the drop-off end and then test the ascender. We figure that's a good spot beause if the ascender takes some getting used to we can always just walk up the break-down side to try again.
