Demolition has begun. Wonder who's going to end up with the Milk bottle medallions? I hope Larry Giles.

Interestingly, someone who was knowledgeable about STL universities and development mentioned that the reason SLU's new building east of grand is set so far from Chouteau is that there was a mine or cave underneath the corner. I may have to look into it. I know there was a quarry west of grand a block north of Chouteau.

*sigh* another place i'll never get to explore. :(
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

There isn't anything in it to explore. I just drove by it yesterday and didn't see any demolition. Then again, I wasn't looking too closely.

Tear it all down! Fuck.

It's there isn't it? What more reason do you need?

it's a few blocks away, just curious. it's an old facade off of some building.

No clue. From the looks of it on Google Earth it was a huge building.

Yeah, but it was all empty, right?

It was empty, but the building was so weird and massive that it was definitely a cool exploration. You didn't think so?

I think so, fo sho. I'm just saying there isn't anything in it to explore - that is, it's not a super crazy exploration, it's a historic building that should be preserved, though!

This calls it the former "Park Avenue Shops". The address matches up; it's now owned by Cardinal Glennon Hospital.

You guys wanna make a human fence and barricade the perimeter? That would be fun!

The quarry I know about is just north of Gratiot where the railroad and metrolink run today. You can't really see it in the bing birdseye: http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&cp=qf4674 ... orm=LMLTCC

but in the winter there's still a limestone face between the bus parking lot and lower industrial lots.

The facade is the only remainder of the Tiffany streetcar shops. I believe that served all the streetcars running on Grand and many others in south city. The other streetcar shops I know about were at Delmar and DeBalivere and at the current loop lofts building on skinker north of the metrolink.
