First off, I'd like to quickly introduce myself. My name's Greg and, while I'm new here, I'm not new to exploring. As of now I've been exploring caves in Cliff Cave park but my small group has recently become bored with this area so we would like to move to a new place. I found a preview of a book that lists the entrance of "Great Scott Cave" in Washington, MO as well as over 80 more "known" caves in the area. Any information on any caves within the surrounding 40 miles of St. Louis county, near Cliff Cave, would be greatly appreciated. Those who have not been in the caves in Cliff Cave park, NOT including cliff cave, I would be happy to return the favor with some locations for you.
Thanks for any help offered and I look forward to being a part of this. |

Awesome, I'm surprised they haven't been visited already.
Does anyone have info on some other caves in the area that could be shared? PM or email is fine, I just really want to get into something new around here!
Also, I don't know how much you guys get into the more technical stuff like vertical caving but there is a drop off at the end of the cave in cliff cave park. It doesn't lead anywhere at the bottom but it's fun just to climb down and have a look around. |

I'm interested in getting back into caving, but I don't know any thing about the caves in this part of the state. _________________ Now I'll be bold, As well as strong

| I live in Franklin County and have never heard of a reference to caves in WashMO. Obviously, there are others in the county, but what book did you find that mentioned the cave? |

| Ah, I see now -- Washington County, not Washington, MO (the city in Franklin County). |

Yep, sorry about the confusion! Any ideas?
They don't have to just be in that area... I haven't been able to find much anywhere... |

| Not far from you is a Meramec State Park in Sullivan. There are more caves in this state park than any other in Missouri. I just moved to Franklin County and have been interested in checking these out for quite awhile. |

I knew there were a bunch of permit and non-permit caves there (and of course, I'm sure, unmarked caves). I just don't want to go all the way there without an idea of where some of them might be, ya know?
I found one out in Greensfelder park that has obviously been visited numerous times but it's not actually blocked off. Didn't have my stuff so I didn't go in, it was just a scouting day.
Also found one a couple days before that in Rockwoods Reservation that wasn't blocked. Only went back about 20 feet and was tight but it was definitely a "virgin" cave. No graffiti or anything, it was awesome. |

Do you have this cd of cave maps?
If it's like the SW MO maps cd, they occasionally have the location listed on the map... not exactly, but enough that you can figure it out. _________________ Now I'll be bold, As well as strong

So, I haven't been here in a while. My partners moved to Springfield for school and we haven't had much time to do any exploring. However, I was able to fill my trunk with relevant gear (ropes, crash pad, climbing gear, everything...). So I am hoping to find something really good to get into around here again. I saw the USS Inaugural and thought that would be a good way to get back into the whole thing. I'll be going out there Wednesday most likely.
I just caught the link to the CD and it looks to be still available (nearly a year later!)
Anyway, just thought I would bump the post and see if anyone has info on caves <40 miles from the south county/affton area. And I would definitely still be down to take some people in the small cave by cliff cave. |
