Springfield and Jordan Creek tunnel flood pictures and video
When it started pouring this weekend, Hiccup and I were near the Jordan Creek tunnel and noticed the water level was slowly coming up. It's normally just a few inches deep, for those of you that aren't farmiliar. So, we decided to air up the raft and try to raft through the tunnel, which I've wanted to do forever.
However, when we finished blowing up the raft and ran back down to the tunnel (maybe 10 minutes), the water was two feet from the ceiling and it's about a 9 foot high tunnel. We decided rafting was probably deadly at that point and just watched as the water rose all the way to the roof of the tunnel. If it had rained just another hour, it would've spilled over the top.
Here's a video of the eastern entrance to the tunnel:

And here's some pictures of the tunnel, and all the streets that were backing up with water because the tunnel was too full to accept more water. It was awesome. Water was literally squirting OUT of the storm drains, I assume from the water pressure in the tunnel. The last picture is a guy stuck in a flooded area over near Glenstone.

those are some sweet pics. someone told me earlier that fassnight creek was nearly overflowing and like 3 feet of water on each side on top of the ground was flowing with it. I wonder what would happened if it would have rained longer than it did.

i had a blast playing in the rain yesterday, and i totally dig thunder and lightning
even though it was a letdown that we were unable to raft the tunnel last night, i still thought it was fun because i got to be out in that craziness.
of the pics WR posted, my fave is the rainbow--that was very cool

before it started raining and there was the massive thunder and lightning I think lightning struck near my apartment, sparks were flying on the telephone lines

Yeah, I wish I had gotten to have seen that but at the same time I'm glad my car didn't get flooded. It's a good thing I have full car insurence. You guys must have been so soaked! Weren't you afraid your camera would die in that rain?

Dude... As we were sitting there in the car by one of the entrances, we saw this huge explosion down the road, sparks everywhere. I knew it was a transformer blowing, so I floored it down the road to it, hoping it would blow again. It blew two more times, but I wasn't able to get to it and whip out my camera fast enough. It would've been an awesome picture, though.bluecookies wrote:before it started raining and there was the massive thunder and lightning I think lightning struck near my apartment, sparks were flying on the telephone lines
Oh yeah. My seats are still wet.Underdog wrote:You guys must have been so soaked! Weren't you afraid your camera would die in that rain?
And yeah, I was totally worried about my camera. We like tried to use a bunch of stuff as makeshift umbrellas to take pictures, but just sitting in the car and shooting out the window worked best. If we actually had gone rafting, we were going to put my backpack in the rubbermade tote that I keep the bote in to try and keep it dry. I didn't want to bring my camera if we did it, but there's no way I could do that and not take pictures.

Did anyone have problems with the video? If so, it's playable now.

Damn man. I've seen the tunnels flooded before, but never THAT flooded. I'm really mad at myself now for never rafting that tunnel when I had the chance. I lived on campus for 3 years, and I had my raft the whole time, but I never once took the time to drag myself downtown and put it in the water.

Dang...And I thought it rained in Tallahassee! Can you imagine what all that water would have done had the current improvements on Jordan Creek not been in place? Glad you didn't go rafting in there. As they say in Wisconsin..."that could be dangerous there!"
RE: Springfield and Jordan Creek tunnel flood pictures and v
Flooding was the whole reason for covering the creek. There are pictuers from the 1920's of the creek flooding.
