This is a sad, but common, occurance across America and the world as well.

I drove out there today and noticed the water tower for Alswel with the name in the side about ten houses outside of the gated community. It's ivy covered but its there. If I get a chance, I'll take a camera out there tomorrow. There's an building nearby that looks related. I'll see what kind of pics I can get although it is on provate property.
Kinda gives you the scope of the original property.

I bought a collection of bottles that were dug up years ago next to Alswell. They are from the turn of the century and were probably either used by William Lemp or his son who occupied Alswell for a time before his death...I've always wondered what they are worth just based on their historical value????

Here is an odd sidebar...after Charles Lemp killed himself in the Mansion...he requested that he be cremated and placed in a wicker box and buried on the "Farm". What farm he was refering to was and still is a mystery. Aparently Edwin Lemp carried out his wishes after Charles Died. I theroize that the "Farm" Charles Lemp was refering to was indeed Edwin Lemps Cragwold Estate. Edwin had alot of animals and such on his estate, it was a gentalmans farm...I say that Charles Lemp is buried at Cragwold...somewhere.

It would be interesting to also know where the caretaker burned Edwin and the Lemp family effects when Edwin died...he did it at Cragwold somewhere on the estate...It would be interesting to dig there and see what...if anything could be found...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that somehow the current owners of this house are related to me. I seem to recall my dad saying he's been to a few gatherings there.

You can get a good look at Chinamans Castle if you go through a little trouble. Park by the tennis club off of old Gravois rd, on foot follow the high power lines south for about 1/3 mile. Look for a gap in the spacing between the
new homes built on the bluffs that overlook the Meramec River valley. Go up the wooded hillside and You'll be right behind it. Be advised that you will be trespassing for at least part of this hike. In the old days we used to park at the end of Mentz Hill rd where it enters Forest Path dr and walk down a trail a little toward the river then up another that climbs the hill but I didn't know if it was cool to park around there anymore. good luck

Can anyone verify this story?
| Quote: | Anyway, there's a back road up to the main house, China man's castle, that's closed now. It's a skinny rock road that cut's through the woods up a hill.....This is a true story because I saw it as recently as 2 year's ago and saw it first in 1986 traveling there on my Schwinn 10 speed bike after reading historic newspaper articles......In the late '70's a group of teenagers drove up the road and hit a tree. There car rolled down the hill through the woods and everyone in the car died. The newspaper stated they found one of them in a tree! The car is still sitting there to this day! It's a green 1970 Oldsmobile 2 door Cutlass. The tree still stand's that they hit and no bark has grown back where they made impact.
The path down the hill through the woods where the car rolled has never grown over. It's not bare, just no tree's or brush. It's trippy to say the least. You can see the path while imagineing it rolling 15 times stopping on it's wheels at the bottom.
The car's been picked over well. IE stripped since the late '70's. But the scary part is, as stated....The car STILL SITS THERE at the bottom of this hill in the woods TO THIS DAY!

Bing has the map during the winter... There seems to be something by the road.. but looking at the google map it seems that whatever it is moves around.
Never been there but I dont see a road through the woods on the bing map that should there according to the story. IF I am in the right place...
