Doling Park

So I went out to Doling the other day and saw the usual sights. It reminded me of a few questions I keep forgetting to ask. For one, what is that concrete thing thing with a manhole cover on it down by the tunnels? It seems to almost always have a decent amount of water flowing through it and runs from the direction of the park and towards the tunnels. I seem to remember hearing those concrete structures are the remains of some sort of water treatment facility, but what was the purpose of each one?
And finally, has anyone gone on the cave tour? I was able to sneak in and give myself the "self guided tour" and it's fairly impressive and everything, but I can't imagine what they could talk about to make it long enough to really be considered a tour. I'd like to go on it anyway just for the experience though.

I'm not sure what any of those structures north of Doling were used for when they were sewage treatment facilities but perhaps one of the current city agencies may know... maybe even one of the 3 treatment facilities we have around town might have someone who'd know.

Hm, good idea. I could probably also look at information for existing/outdated facilities and see if there is anything similar. It's not really that important, I'm just curious.

I am not even 100% certain that those structures are the remains of the sewage treatment plant. I just know that there used to be one in that area until the 1950's. I've been waiting for someone to call bullshit and prove me wrong on my theory of what those structures are.

I was really unimpressed with the cave. It has been severely altered from its natural state.
I still remember many years back (2000 or 2001?) when a toxic cloud of gas came out the cave for a few days. There was also a HUGE fish kill during this incident.

Any have any info on this?

hey I went out to doling park for the first time today. It was a pretty neat place. I found the tunnels and those concrete things, but I found somthing else out there I hadn't hear anyone metion before. To the east of those concrete structures maybe, I dunno maybe a hundred yards away, there is an old well house. I think it's on private property, because there was an old rusted barbed wire fence I stepped over to get to it. I don't know how old it is, but the floor is caved in and you can see down into the water table and see the old pump. Also on an interesting side note laying on the ground in the corner of the building where the floor hadn't collapsed was an old yellowed catalouge looking thing. I decided to look it over for a date, and I was shocked to find the first page I flipped open to had black and white illustrations of erect weiners. After another page flip I became away that what I was looking at was an antique gay porn mag. No color, not actual photos, just drawings and stories. I thought that was funny.

yeah, well if I ever find any sort of paper in an abandoned site I tend to look it over for a date. Usualy you can get a pretty rough estimate of when the last time the building was in regular use was. Well I didn't get a date off the antique gay porn, cause I didn't want to flip through it anymore after I became aware of what it was, just an interesting story about how you never can tell what you'll find.
