Freeburg Mo. RR Tunnel Under Hwy 63.

Post by cherry63376 »

I just got back from the Freeburg Mo. RR Tunnel Under Hwy 63. Hard to find, good thing I did my homework, should have had rubber boots. The tunnel runs right under the town! The whole town must have shook when a Locamotive went under it. No sign of anyone going there. No trail or graffitti. Old Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Rail Road. Runs right past Creve Coure Park on its way West. Also got pics of the massive tressle over the Gasgonade River.

Google historic bridges of the midwest. There is also another tunnel 8 miles west for the same RR.

Feel free to share man. Directions to the tunnel, perhaps? Same goes for that Eugene tunnel.

I haven’t had a chance to go to the Eugene tunnel yet, it is under highway 17 in Eugene Mo. There is a road in Eugene called tunnel rd. and that is close to the West entrance. There are a lot of people who drive over that tunnel and don’t know it is there. That whole line is overgrown so much you have to know what you are looking for. The steel rails are still in place. From here the rail line goes into Eldon Mo and that was the setting for Petticoat Junction and the train in that show was the Cannon Ball. The producer of that show’s producer’s wife use to spend summer break there as a child along with two other girls from the city while on summer vacation.
When they got into town the country boys would call on the phone and say we want to talk to one of those city girls. Back then the train stopped in Eldon and returned the way it came just like in the show even though the line went to Kansas City. A portion of this line from Sedalia Mo to Kansas city Mo has been given to the state to further the Katie trail in trade for the damage done by Thom Sualk disaster because Union Electric owns this line.

Found the Eugene one finally. It's huuuge.
Uhh here are some directions for anybody wondering: Take the MO 17/Eugene exit off of 54, go down MO 17 enough until you're by Tunnel St. and Southwest Ln. The tracks essentially run almost parallel to Tunnel St. The tunnel goes directly under M0 17. We parked at at the end of Southwest Ln and walked across MO 17 and there it was, the west entrance was literally right there, right across the street. But yeah look at a map and it'll probably make more sense.
