RE: Rope Ladder
I built one of those cable ladders today. It turned out extremely well, exactly 25 feet long, but it took a lot more time than I thought it would. I don't have a drill press (although I'm thinking of buying one now), so it took forever to individually drill out holes for each ladder rung. Attaching all the cable clamps took quite a while, too. After all the work I put into it, I'm not so sure I want to leave it in the cave. But if I get a drill press, I'll definitely make a couple because I could crank out a couple more in no time.
Here's a few pictures. I had my brother test out the ladder on a tall tree. He had a rope and a harness, so I had him use that just in case the cable clamps weren't strong enough to hold the ladder rungs. It worked perfect, though.

You could fit it in a duffel bag or a backpack if you could do a really good job of rolling it up.S1L3N7B0B wrote:Well done! How big is it while rolled up?

That lightweight pipe they use for the toprail on chain link fences.ropingk wrote:W/R what did you use for the runs???
I just put them underneath the rungs. I probably should have put them above the rungs, too, because they tend to slide up and down a lot when the ladder isn't vertical. But it was a pain connecting all those little cable clamps as it is. I might still do it if I get really ambitious thoughand did you use the cable clamps on the top and the botton of each??
RE: Rope Ladder
Very nice, now buy a drill press and make a bunch and sell them on ebay for fun and profit!
RE: Rope Ladder
You can buy them online but they might be out of some peoples budget.

Our grotto (caving club) had one. I really don't care for cable ladders
but we've used them a few times for short nuisance drops.

I'd like to look at one of those in real life, just to see how they're made versus mine. I'd probably never buy one, though. That ladder's only 32ft and it's $150. Mine might not look as professional, but I could build one that's 50ft for less than $50.caver wrote:You can buy them online but they might be out of some peoples budget.

You sure as hell could make a small ebay business out of that.

The rungs are just wide enough for one foot.
The rungs are hollow aluminum and about a half inch in diameter. Most likely aircraft aluminum. They use crimps on the cable which is very small but rated for the task. Very lightweight.

very impressive! wish we would have had one of these in the clay cave. would have made climbing walls of clay a lot easier!

RE: Rope Ladder
And how exactly did you get it up in that tree?
