Allenton, MO @ Six Flags exit in Eureka.
First post. Love the site.
Please tell me someone else was able to go to this. Abandoned town. Developers bought out. Typical story. Too many buildings. Too little time.
I have probably 600 pics of the 3 days we spent here. There were at least 20 different houses/churches/etc. On the last day we were literally about 10 minutes ahead of the wrecking crew.

That old TV with the new shirt is an awesome picture.

o.O a buddy of mine lives like five minutes away from that exit, he hasn't mentioned a bought-out town... is it all gone now?
Re: Allenton, MO @ Six Flags exit in Eureka.
I had no idea that was even there!

You can find it in some dump somewhere now.redox wrote:That old TV with the new shirt is an awesome picture.
The last day we were there, we would go in a house, come out, go in another, come out, and the first one would be destroyed. Like I said, we were about 10 minutes ahead of the wrecking crew.
I guess some of these people got paid off pretty well, because a few houses were still full of clothes, computers, food, everything living people use. They'd been abandoned for (on average) 2-3 years. It smelled pretty bad, but was worth it. I want to go back and see whats there now, but I don't think it would be worth the drive (I live in St. Charles).
The house with the old TV was probably abandoned long before the rest of the town was. It was 100+ years old in great shape, except the kitchen floor was removed (in mid-remodel when abandoned, I assume).
Inconsiderate assholes had broke a lot of the windows in a lot of the buildings, and stuff like that, and probably stole a lot of the goodies. Since it was going to all be thrown away anyway, I stole an LC Smith No 8 typewriter (dating from about 1915), some bowling balls (there were a bunch of bowling balls in these houses), and a potato gun. I've begun work on restoring the typewriter. More pictures are to come as soon as I get them on this computer.
The plan for the area is to push the whole hill back into a valley, put up 1400 houses, a Wal-Mart, Lows, Olive Garden, etc.
It's a fucking shame. TONS of history.... gone. Forever.

One step ahead of the wrecking crew....
One of the houses, BEFORE:
and after:
..another BEFORE:
and after:
You could see Six Flags out the front window of the post office:
This sign was posted on the FAR end of the town:
If anyone's in the area, stop by and let us know what's left of the town!

The red dots mark the abandoned buildings near the highway. We didn't have much time to investigate some of the other ones further back. But, at least we got 95% of these. The problem was there is a motorcycle shop in the middle of the pic that was still operational, a church in the upper right that still had service(s), and a couple houses in the lower right that people still lived in.

How long ago were these pics taken? This is the first I had heard of this and my curiosity is peaked. Thanks for sharing the pics and info.

All pics taken in October 2006.

This sign was also on the FAR end of town:
I've recalculated my collection and I have over 700 pics of a little more than 30 buildings.

I have class with a guy from the area and he told me that the neighborhood kept denying offers from the city to buy everyone out. By the time they accepted, they got paid off extremely well. The guy said that one person he knew lived in one of those trailers that were in there and got ~$85,000 supposedly. So I guess that would explain why there were so many personal belongings left behind...they must've thought "Fuck it, I'm rich!"
He also said that, not surprisingly, alot of the people blew the money and ended up rather poor and having to move around alot from place to place...
Due to the fact that this comprised of ~30 houses fairly secluded in their own side of town, it was incredibly creepy, very Resident Evil-ish.
Also I think it's funny that we roamed around the neighborhood for like 3 days with no police intervention only being kicked out of one of the houses by the wrecking crew because they were starting to demolish it. Then you go back years later when the demolition is complete and get busted looking at piles of rubble from inside your vehicle.

and what the hell happened to your pics? I never uploaded mine...

It's funny that you bring this up, because a couple weeks ago (when this threads was still dormant), I asked WR if I, or he, could go change the links to the right account.SubLunar wrote:and what the hell happened to your pics? I never uploaded mine...

As I wrote in my blog a couple weeks back:
Yep, Allenton. Same as it looked in my October 3rd entry. Same as it's looked for 3 years now. What a complete waste. That used to be a church, by the way.
The following used to be a cool old house..
..and a motorcycle shop..
..and a post office..
..and a freaking mansion..
..and a really old house with a nice, large stone fireplace..
..and a pawn shop..
Yep. I'm a hardened criminal. I didn't even step foot out of my truck to take these pictures. A cop was following me and finally pulled me over.
"What are you doing?"
"Taking pictures of what used to be a town."
"Is this a project or is it personal?"
"Uh.. both."
"Well, we're supposed to keep a close eye on this place. There are No Trespassing signs."
"Oh."
What a joke! Cops. Paid. To patrol piles of rubble. Wow..
Where was he when I explored every building in this town over several days and took about 1000 pictures? Ha.
