Giant Reciever Dish?
Giant Reciever Dish?
Anyone ever hear of a giant satellite dish in Arkansas? I want to say over towards the Crowley's Ridge part of the state? I saw it one of the news channels(KARK maybe?), they were doing this summer long helicopter over Arkansas thing. Anyways, they showed this giant dish, I'm talking huge, obviously big enough to be seen from the air. They said it was something Howard Hughes did when he started to get into satellite communications. Anyways, it never got up, but now sits there abandoned. I can't find anything on the internet about it. Just wondering if anyone else had ever seen/heard anything on it. I bet it'd be awesome to find and explore.
Re: Giant Reciever Dish?
If it's that big you should be able to find it with Google Earth. Let me know if you figure out a good general area and I'll help you search.

Re: Giant Reciever Dish?
I don't have time to today, but I will start searching AR on Google Earth for this thing. I think if we work together we should be able to find it if it really exists. Once found...FIELD TRIP!
RE: Giant Reciever Dish?
Problem with that is most of eastern Arkansas isn't capable of being zoomed in on in Google Earth. I'll give Terra Server a try and see if I can dig anything up that way.
Re: Giant Reciever Dish?
Good point. I haven't even opened GE yet to start searching.

Well I just e-mailed the manager at KARK asking if they could provide me with any information about the dish. Hopefully we'll at least get a specific location. And Hopefully it was the correct tv station.

I emailed the guy who's been doing the Monte Ne specials over at KATV asking the same thing. Hopefully one of us will get an answer.GlassCurtain wrote:Well I just e-mailed the manager at KARK asking if they could provide me with any information about the dish. Good thinking, maybe one of those will turn up something useful.
RE: Giant Reciever Dish?
Here we go, I got an email back from Steve Powell today:
As I figured, that part of Arkansas has shitty satellite images on google earth. I'll try terra server later on. I'm in class right now so I can't do much. Thought I'd give everyone a heads up.Steve Powell wrote:Hi Jimmy,
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but I had forgotten where that
satellite dish was. Your memory was right I did do the story several years ago.
It is in Montgomery County near Hopper and west of Caddo Gap. It was once owned
by the Hughes Corporation. Originally it tracked the first satellites ever
launched. It is now owned by a retired engineer in North Little Rock. Again,
sorry I'm so late getting back to you, but that's the deal. Thanks for thinking
of me... Steve

I tried messing with Terra Server, but it won't let me zoom in enough to really see anything. Gotta be a subscriber...

Here's a "radio tower", near Hopper and west of Caddo Gap. I can't tell from the areial photo if it's the dish, but it's in about the right area...

Cool that might be it!! unfortunately the guy at KARK hasn't e-mailed me back yet. and GE is pretty much crap in that area.
