abandoned neighbor

Post by the_stuart »

I went and investigated some abandoned houses last weekend. They are right off of North St. right behind Hog Wild Pizzeria. I'm about 90% sure they are scheduled for demolishion to make way for a new huge luxury apartment complex like the one on the block across the street. There was something incredibley eerie about this place. A whole neighborhood completely vacant. However, I didn't go in any of the houses although I did peer in. I was alone and it looked like squatters had already taken up residents.

I had to hop a fence to get these pictures, this is the biggest house on the block. I really loved the swing set that was in the back yard.

I really liked this one. It was in the middle of the block away from the street. I would actually have considered living here if I had had the chance.

At this point I heard a voice say "Cantcha just look?" I looked around and didn't see anyone. It freaked me out enough to leave pretty quick. I was actually on my scooter most of the time I was there cause it was quicker and easier than being on foot. This probably made me considerably less conspicuous even though my scooter is pretty quiet. I want to try and go back again before it all gets torn down with some more people and actually try and explore the houses.

New member here, but I have been watching this place for a while (found it b/c of the Dogpatch posts).

One of my friends found this post yesterday after I showed him the board, and we ended up going over there to check it out. It looked to me like the entire street was purchased for more apartments like you mentioned (there are several new ones in that area). One of the houses on that street has already been demolished, but the majority of them have not been touched yet.

The only thing that was odd about it to me was that te yards were still in good shape. It seems like they were emptied pretty reciently, and one of the houses is actually kinda nice.

Let me know if you want to go back over there to check them out before they are gone for good.

Here is one of the pictures for those of you that didn't copy and paste the addys.

Off the corner of North and Garland. There are some apartments behind that shoping center, and it is on one of the streets back in that area. It's not really a neighborhood, so much as two streets.

The house I posted is actually on W Hazel St.

The city is Fayetteville AR.
The street is Oakland (I believe) and a few others. This is north of the U of A down the hill. This street has been considered "blighted" by the city for awhile. This area is being heavily "redeveloped" by apartment complex owners. The other trend in this area is to purchase one or two lots, raze the structure, then build a duplex to quadplex on the lot(s). This has been going on for about seven years now. Drive north down Leverette and you will see the large complexs built so far.
We have a large homeless/squatter population in Fayetteville. Many have problems such as alcoholism, mental illness, and drug dependancy. If you encounter a homeless person or persons who begin to act agitated, LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY! Most are harmless, some are not.

Couldn't I just shoot them? No one would miss them.

I talked to the training officer today. He said we are probably going to do some training in the old homes. However, we won't be able to do any live burns in them. :(
They're going down for a new complex.

As of 10-13-06, the contractors have started taking some of the homes down. All homes in this area will be taken down for a large development of condos and townhouses.
These are the streets that border the 'hood:
Southern border is North St
Western is Oakland Ave
Northern is Holly St
Eastern is Leverett Ave
There is an occupied apartment building in the northern part called The Colonial Arms.
This is all north of the UofA (north of North St).

Man, I feel like a jerk. I cut and pasted this out of my blog and didn't even check to make sure it went through. Here are the pics.

Used to be a nice little 'hood. Unfortunately, it started to run down and became considered "blighted". Now, it's complex fodder.
