RIP KCURBEX.ORG

Post by SubLunar »

?!

So much information in so many forums has been unceremoniously erased recently. I would have chipped in funds/work to help keep it going.

Why'd it stop? I've never been there.

From what I've heard, there may be an announcement soon as to what will happen to the forum's content. But yeah, it's a shame it's been taken down.

If WR ever decides to leave, I think you should take over.

Dang if I would've known they wanted to stop running it, I would've gladly taken over. I have more than enough space on my servers.

I was just talking about KCUrbex this week and decided to revisit the forums and say hello and it is indeed gone. :( I stayed away too long.

I'm going to try and get a hold of the owner of kcurbex and see if I can get the user tables and forum tables so I can dump them into my site.

Traffic at KCURBEX declined to almost zero when Facebook took over the internet. Also, the membership system discouraged new people.

My only argument to that is 1: Who cares about daily traffic to the site? The information already posted is a value in itself. Usage can fluctuate, doesn't mean the site loses its value. 2: At least potential members had a place to go and sign up and start commenting. Now that channel is not viable. If the membership system was a deterrent, why not open the site up a little more to the new people and give them a little more reason to stick around?

I'm not asking you specifically, this is more hypothetically. It's not my hometown so I don't expect anyone to care I'm just stating these observations generally.

As for me, I can't stand facebook for any reason, let along exploring related activities. Archiving and searching features are practically useless. There's a benefit to spending hours of your day researching and posting good information to an internet forum that becomes part of the internet indefinitely and can be dug up by someone years later. There's essentially no value to posting research material to facebook. On top of the significant lack of comparable value, there's the drama and all the stupid non-exploring related distractions that come along with social media. I only joined facebook because some out of town exploring comrades of mine insisted i join. Networking with those sorts of people is one slight advantage that is admittedly in facebook's favor. But for me, I try to not get on more than once a week or so. And with all the political shit going on right now, I think I'll be good stretching that out to once a month..

All I'm saying is: A forum (like kcurbex) has value even if it's not highly trafficked anymore and it doesn't hurt anything to leave it up.. so why not just leave it be? If WR ever decides to sell UO, I've already told him I'd buy it. And even if no-one used it, I'd still leave it up.

Except, as we see in this instance, it's not always indefinite.

But I agree with all your other statements and your intent.

Alright - Considering bringing the site back up. No details yet, but expect some traction soon..
