12 Cobras escape local pet store!
Got your attention didn't I?
This morning I was reading through some of the websites I have found with Springfield related history and check out what I found.
"In August of 1953 a story began that kept Springfield in the headlines for some time and which is preserved even today in the city's seal. A dozen hooded Indian cobras escaped from a pet dealer on St. Louis Street and the city was petrified for several months as the reptiles continued to be found throughout the community. Cobra music was played through loudspeakers (at right) in an attempt to lure the snakes out of hiding."
That is crazy! I can't imagine what it must have been like to live near the area where the snakes first escaped. I would be afraid to open any doors or drawers for fear of finding a cobra.

That is scary. How'd they finally catch them?

You just repeated what she said williard.

Playing "Cobra music" was pointless. All snakes are deaf. Cobras appear to be "dancing" to the music but they are really following the charmers movement.

You know that.
I know that.
Springfieldians as a group, though, aren't exactly the brightest collective crayon in the box.

Why'd the petstore have them in the first place. That's not exactly something you'd want for a pet, is it?

It is a proven fact that the larger the group of people the lower the collective IQ.Mindscape wrote:You know that.

Um... I'm not sure what happened to the post about the city's seal, but it occurs to me that I've never seen the seal. At least, I can't remember it. Can someone throw me a link?

The Springfield PD used to have a cobra on the logos on their cars because of this. Drury still has one of the cobras in a jar somewhere, too.

I actually remeber reading an article about calling the sprinfield cardinals the Cobras, because of this, but the cardinals beat it out.... because cardinals are so much more intimedating.....

Or perhaps due to the fact that the "Cobras" would be a stupid name.
And that's not true anyway.
The Springfield Cardinals, since its conception, have been referred to as the Springfield Cardinals. It would not have been named anything else because they are operated by the St Louis Cardinals franchise.
