Mechanized bolters are definitely safer. It's not too dangerous, though. Limestone mines are pretty safe.

Just wondering, is this the mine between Liberty and Missouri City?

Agreed. I wish somebody could have saved it. It would be perfect for Queen Elizabeth to sit on top and wave to the crowd.
