Sub is totally correct. Which is why before I enter into any building or house that most would think is abandon and empty I knock on a wall or door frame and announce my present with a hello just in case.

I did not say for trespassing. I said the opposite. but you may use force if you or anyone on your property is in immediate danger, and that includes danger to your property.

As a non-lawyer, the best advice I know of is don't tell the cops anything. Don't assume the law is any particular way. Wait until they appoint you a lawyer or you get one yourself, and then work out your story with him.
