Abandoned coal mine in Heber Springs
Abandoned coal mine in Heber Springs
I was told there was an abandoned coal mine somewhere on Sugarloaf Mountain. Sugarloaf is about 2 1/2 miles east of court house in town. Supposedly it was an attempt to find coal when the train ran past the mt. on its way into town. Guy told me there were gps coordinates on some web site but can't find it.
There is a trail to top of Sugarload and now a trail at base circling around it.

I can tell you there are not any mines on top of Sugarloaf Mountain in Heber Spring. Don't know about Sugar Loaf Mountain in the lake.

I can't remember that website but a little research will find it for you. Its a pretty cool little search engine.

RE: Abandoned coal mine in Heber Springs
A guy I know who is almost 90 told me today of an "old timer" he knew 50 years ago who told him about this. He said that there was a mine but maybe its not on Sugarloaf but in that area. He's going to talk to the grandson of this "old timer".
Its not on top of Sugarloaf or the thousands of people who have climbed up there have never mentioned it to anyone. I've lived around here 35 years and never heard of this nor have others born her. I'll check our historical society since they are very active around here.

Re: Abandoned coal mine in Heber Springs
Just unmark everything but abandoned and then search for coal also.

I followed the directions this time and i can see app where it is. We'll be heading up there sat looking for it. We have been told of another abandoned mine for coal in the county. In fact I've walked right past it without knowing about it. Its near the new county fair grounds in Heber Springs.s.sisco wrote:Just unmark everything but abandoned and then search for coal also.

These are the fossil remains of the trees / roots that also became coal.

We went out there today but hadn't seen your post. I didn't see anything like this but will look next time. We did find it. Its just a pit maybe 2 or 3 feet deep now. I'll poke around more next time. I got pics but can't get out of camera till get on different computer.
If your going up sugarloaf anyway its something to see. Its not far from main trail. It was right off the south trail to the top. Most people take the much easier north trail from parking lot but we hiked around the base trail to the south.
We also went looking for an abandoned bit coal mine which is or was just off Bittle Rd near the new County Fair Grounds. We didn't see it and think that the people constructing the new hiking trail had it filled in. An old abandoned car in the woods was also gone. I'd heard there was an 8ft x 8ft pit they dug coal out years ago and had fenced it off to keep kids out. I'd seen it years ago and didn't know what it was
