Newb
I'm a new guy on the forum so I though I aught to make an introduction post. I'm from Festus but currently residing in Columbia for school, and of course I enjoy exploring abandoned buildings, mines, caves, or even hiking through scenic areas, etc. I'll be back in the STL area on the week of Nov. 19th so I hope to make a list of places to explore during that time.
That week I'm also going to try to compile some video of a trio of places for a little youtube series. These include
The Vision of Peace: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&m ... 1a02476394
Old Sand Mines: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&m ... de43be5f97
and The Christina House: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&m ... 087b4357ec
It's convenient because all three places are within a half or three-quarters mile from each other.
The Vision of Peace is an old hermitage condemned in the 70s and consists of two large buildings.
For anyone interested in pictures: http://s769.photobucket.com/albums/xx33 ... f%20Peace/
The sand mines are two mines that go a few hundred feet back in the side of a hill. There's also some cool stuff if you hike around the area. Again pictures: http://s769.photobucket.com/albums/xx33 ... d%20Mines/
And the Christina House (no pics for this one) are ruins of a stone or brick home including an in-ground swimming pool that was made by damming a creek. It's probably over 100 years old and in it's day I bet it was quite a nice home. It's named after the girl who presumably killed her parents and haunts the grounds. It's probably not true but it's still a cool story we used to tell each other as kids.
Sorry if any of the locations I listed have already been posted before. I searched the topics back to 2009 and didn't see any of them. Anyway I've already seen some pretty cool places posted and hopefully I can check some of them out when I get back to StL.
*Edit: sorry the BB code wasn't working for me so I just put the links instead..

RE: Newb
Hey, I'm in CoMo, also an STL expat. My schedule's usually pretty busy, but PM me if there's anything super interesting in Columbia you want to check out and I'll see if I can go. I haven't had much time to look up many locations near here.
What kind of places are you looking to explore in St. Louis? How much experience do you have exploring?

Yeah, i haven't had the time to search for places in Columbia yet. And I have minimal experience exploring St.Louis city places. I can never find anyone with enough balls to accompany me to the city. I usually have to settle for rural areas between Pevely and Potosi for my explorations. Honestly I'm down for anything though. As a start I really want to check out St Mary's and Falstaff over the week of Thanksgiving

Welcome to the forum.
Thank you! I was wondering what that place was. Cool pics.BagHead727 wrote: The Vision of Peace: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&m ... 1a02476394

Re: Newb
Always wondered what that Vision of Peace building was.
The sand mines look very cool. Also, judging from that pic of the red car.....a common target range!

Interesting - I wonder why the extensive RR rails have not been salvaged - lotsa iron there.SubLunar wrote:While you're at it:http://binged.it/U4v2QX
Also, a very interesting story in the P-D yesterday about MO sand used in fracking.

Also, that cement plant place has been discussed at some point on this forum. IIRC, it is difficult to get to and/or still owned/monitored by the large cement plant slightly to the northwest.

RE: Newb
I thought the Christina house was still standing. When did it get torn down? The last I remembered it was standing was in 2000, but a lot of stuff can happen between now and then.

Re: RE: Newb
Are you sure you're not thinking of Vision of Peace? A lot of people confuse the two. The Christina house when I explored it last year it was just stone walls and foundation - no roof or anything. But I guess it could have looked quite different back in 2000Batman wrote:I thought the Christina house was still standing. When did it get torn down? RE: Newb
Yeah, I swear it was the Christina house. But at that time I was told it was an old orphanage with the normal ghost story about the place. I knew it had to be the same house once you described the pool. And again, that was back in 2000. I will say it once an awesome house and it makes me wish I had a camera back then.
