U.S.S. Inaugural
Re: U.S.S. Inaugural
Considering the author thinks the low water is revealing almost the entire ship, I'm not expecting much from this news piece.

More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

► NEWSFLASH ◄
I just noticed in the paper and confirmed it on two of the photos in the online version (see the link) - the 3"/50 main gun has been stolen from its mount!
This has happened sometime after Mandi's, Nicotti's, and SubLunar's photos of mid to late August and yesterday, when the P-D said it took its photos.
This barrel and associated hardware - not including the mount which is still in situ - weighed nearly 1700 pounds, so it was not a two-person job.
I made an appropriate comment on the P-D's site.

RE: U.S.S. Inaugural
It was Bob Cassilly's ghost, I'll bet.

Aw what the fuck!
Re: U.S.S. Inaugural
What pic do you see that shows that? I can't see it in any of them.
However, it looks like someone removed the bent metal from around the hole to the engine room that Sub crawled in.

RE: U.S.S. Inaugural
The first photo on the P-D's site (sort of a frontal view) and the third, which is a really close-up view of the front 3/4).
Click on the slideshow.
I also noticed my comment from early Ayem had been removed, so I reinserted it - can't imagine why - it just noted the absence of the gun.

RE: U.S.S. Inaugural
Yeah I looked at the images. The Inaugural has been stripped of the main gun. WTF.
Re: U.S.S. Inaugural
Oh the main gun on the front... I thought you were talking about the rear guns.
How the fuck did someone salvage the main gun?

Re: U.S.S. Inaugural
The comments apparently don't work for me, cause I don't see any... not even the one I added.

Re: U.S.S. Inaugural
Someone needs to go to the concrete company place during the day and ask them if they saw anyone taking the gun, cause i bet they used a barge and crane to take it.

RE: U.S.S. Inaugural
This is what I posted (and reposted) on the P-D's site:
► NEWSFLASH ◄.
According to these latest photos...
The 3"/50 gun (the forward one near the bow) was stolen from its mount sometime after mid-August and now. This weighed approximately 1700 pounds (not including the mount), so it was not exactly a two-person job to walk away with it.
Any investigation pending by either the Police Department or the Post-Dispatch?
I also sent this directly to the photographer, Laurie Skrivan, noting that the theft was proven by August photos on "another site," and suggesting that the P-D talk to the concrete company which owns the shore there.
She has not (yet, anyway) replied to my email.
Nicotti - I noticed your comment had disappeared as well.

RE: U.S.S. Inaugural
I emailed her as well. No reply.
Re: U.S.S. Inaugural
I went over there just now. Both the front gun and the small rear gun are gone. The guy I talked to at the concrete plant said they came in one morning and it was gone. They didn't see anyone take it.
I'll post the pics as soon as I get them off the camera.
I emailed RFT, Built STL, and the preservation research office about it, in hopes that one of them can find out more info.
