Moselle No. 10 is an open pit iron mine ca. 1872 - 1880 and is 185 ft deep. Probably tons of pyrites and other iron sulfides around there.
I love geology! pg 65. |

| Off-topic ADHD question of the day: Why do I always smell french fries when I drive through Rolla on I-44? The smell always manifests in the area before the first eastbound Rolla exit. |

That is good to know. I thought I was driving over an ancient indian potato farm.
My only theory is Zenos and their baked potatoes. It's weird because there are no fast food joints in the area. The smell is always at the bottom of the hill. My wife relates the smell to cat food. |

| You should come to Rolla more often, I'd like to see your photography skills firsthand sometime (and stick you in my friend's dorm so you can gas it up a little). |

So, on clear nights with a little wind, the smell of the local dog food factory a couple miles outside town permeates through Rolla and makes the place smell like weird dog food. Couple years ago I started eyeing up a tall set of stairs going up a big tower at the plant cuz I wanted to rappel it, and almost as soon as I got a good idea of what the place was like, they renovated and put new metal siding over just the tower and stairs so now there's no way up. It's like they knew! Bitches.
While I'm thinking about it, the dog food place is on the same road as the experimental mine, which people have often asked me about exploring.
The answer's no, end of story. It's ridiculously secure and patrolled. So, no. |

I was in there in the summer of 2001 when they had an auction after the old man died. The floors were soft and falling in then and there were large holes in the roof. I would hate to see what the condition is in now.
Sadly, its to far gone to save. Even if you had the money the entire interior would have to be gutted. |
I just found Hotel Bourbon this weekend but didn't go in as I had the gf and her kids with me. I only saw the front and one side but it looked pretty sealed. I'll try to make an attempt on it the next time I'm in the area. It looks pretty awesome.

Be careful, if the floors have not been fixed since I was there, they would have to be pretty dangerous now. I don't know how the whole building hasn't fallen in.
I remember the shower the old man used was green and brown from decades of dirt, hard water, and mildew! |

Eh, I've walked on floors that rotted out so much all you had to step on was the support beams (These levels were taller than your typical residential story, so it was one story, but a rather tall one at that and the floor beneath that wasn't a whole lot better). I still have nightmares about that experience actually..
This was not the worst of it, but I didn't exactly feel like stopping for long enough on the beams to get more pics.
As long as the support beams are still there, no problem! |
