I went to a house in Maryland Heights today. It was in a pretty nice neighborhood, but the house was old, the windows were busted, and it had been paint-balled. The back door was open so I let myself inside to find all the floors had been ripped out, along with all the other signs of scrappers. I've never seen this before. At first I thought maybe they were rehabbing it but why wouldn't they board up the windows or lock the doors? There was a bigger house next door that was boarded and locked but the floors were also gone when I looked through the window.

So, scrappers or rehabbers?

Probably. That shit pisses me off, ya know? You couldn't even walk through the upstairs of the house really. Not that there was much to it anyway...

It seems like, even if it was a nice floor, there would be a subfloor not worth stealing/scrapping. I've seen a few houses like that..

looks like they cut the subfloor out along the wall in the 3rd pic.

Maybe they started rehabbing once then ran out of money or something part way thru and left it.

Old hardwood floors are good money in the right places. With the old hardwood floors, no subflooring required.

Yeah the house I grew up in was about 100 years old. No subfloor. When I was a kid I ran and jumped on a chair. The leg of the chair busted through the wooden floor. It happened to be between the supports. My dad made me crawl under the house and fix it.

Yeah, and looking the picture, those strips are some of the tongue-in-groove that split off. Going to happen about every third board, no matter how careful you are. Still, well worth the labor for the price it gets.

Considering there is a guy that digs thru the recycling dumpster behind my apartment for cans every saturday morning, I'll never underestimate the lengths scrappers will go to for cash.

Being in the remodel construction business I can tell you that is indeed what someone has done. You would be surprised what reclaimed lumber brings. We bought some prison beams to make floors with once and those cost us 20 times what it would've to buy nice new floor. Its all because you have something unique your neighbor can't.
