We were down there walking the Riverfront Trail when that happened. There was actually a bus accident that happened right where the shooting was. We saw news crews everywhere and thought it was because of that till we got home and heard what really happened. _________________

We're still not sure what the bldg by the river is. It was a tower with a door at the bottom, a couple of windows in the sides, no roof, and a steel rung ladder on the inside going from the floor to the top. It was either 3 or 4 stories tall. It was on a tall steep bank of the river, on the upstream side there was a concrete square (prolly 12'x12') at about a 50-55 degree angle with a 3" steel ring set into it in the center. There were several large blocks of concrete along the top of the bank as we walked to the tower. And the tower had a 1" steel cable guy wire connecting the top of it to a buried concrete block on the top of the bank. There was also a lot of 1" steel cable half buried in the ground nearby too.
Also there appeared to be a 3" steel pipe buried along the top of the bank of the river (the edge of the stream had cut the dirt back far enough to unearth it in a few spots.
We did not go inside, since neither of us wanted wet feet for the rest of the day.

I didn't get as many pics here as I thought I did, so I'll probably go back sometime for more. _________________ Now I'll be bold, As well as strong

The rectangular concrete structure in the woods appears to be a sand/pea gravel open topped silo for loading dump trucks.
This one's gotta be close to 4 stories tall. Three 1 & 1/2 to 2 stories loading bays with 2 hatches in the ceiling of each bay. Most of the hatches were closed, but one was partially open and we could see plants and stuff growing in the silo. There is a large pile of gravel against the south side of the building. Lot of ivy hanging off the building too.
There is a rebar rung ladder going up the side of the silo part on the east side, but it doesn't continue down to the ground, however there was a 1" steel cable from the ladder to the ground. The bottom of the ladder stops at a 6" ledge, the ledge goes all the way around the building. On the north side there is a 2' diameter downed tree that one could use to climb up to that ledge. Mr. "I like high up, skinny ledges to walk on" The Count pussied out and wouldn't climb up the tree and shimmy over to the ladder. I don't like high skinny places so I sure as hell wasn't going.
To the immediate ne of the building was a 3'x4' concrete slab surrounded by rusted chain-link fence. Looked to me like they might have had a generator or something of the like sitting in there once upon a time.

I found the following paragraph on a fishing forum and it made me wonder if these structures (especially the anchors and cables) weren't somehow dredging related as described below:
| Quote: | | What we learned to look for were the points left from the gravel dredging. The dredging was done with big drag-lines, anchored to a few spots along the east bank. They would move the lines from one spot to another on the west bank and drag all the way across the pool. Those pools had originally been dredged out to be as much as 5-8 times as wide as the normal river channel. When the west bank anchoring spots were moved, the space along that bank in between the anchoring points didn't get dredged, and the points were formed. |

Could very well be. Though I don't know if the Meramec had enough boat traffic on it that it needed dredging... unless it was for industry. But it would make sense for the buildings and other structures that are there. _________________ Now I'll be bold, As well as strong

There were several abandoned and mostly collapsed houses on a property just north of the conservation area that I shall post pics for... as soon as I get around to it.
This stream & small waterfall separates the conservation area from the private property.

Finally posting those pics from here. Everything north of the creek is private property, not conservation land. There was at least two houses mostly to partially collapsed and multiple smaller bldgs. Wasn't really able to get a good look around cause there where friends of the property owners out there shooting stuff. And we didn't feel like being some of that stuff.
These 3 are from the house by the creek:

I can't believe no one posted about this place considering its close proximity to a certain main road and gas station in Wentzville...
