Another (name removed) Cave

Post by jammer_smith »

Myself an a friend went out near the Fuson Conservation Area (known as the home of Smittle Cave) and explored an unmarked cave nearby. We were in the cave for about 5 hours, and at the deepest point were a solid hour from the entrance. We didn't even come close to exploring the whole thing. There main passage went on from where we stopped, with no signs of ending soon. There were several side passages that we never explored. I don't know how long it would take to see the whole thing.

Here are some pictures of the short hike to the cave, the cave opening, and a couple from inside. My flash sucked so I couldn't take many pictures, but as soon as my freind upload them to his dropbox I'll post some from the inside that he took.

Kit thought you died in there, she was nearly inconsolable.
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

She told me she was worried also. I guess maybe I did make it known I was going and then didn't post for two days. I appreciate the concern, but don't worry guys, I've explored probably a little more than 100 caves. I know how to be safe, and the importance of taking a friend with you into any cave that is more than a simple room or short tunnel.

By the time I got home I was just totaly pooped. So I took a shower and went to bed.

I found a map of this cave in the a list of cave maps from Wright County. Turns out my friend and I were just a a few bends away from the end when we turned back.

So not as enormous as I initially thought, but still at least as big/interesting as Ash Grove Cave, and far less vandalized.

The name of the cave is Welch Cave according to the survey, but I can't find it marked on any topo maps, so the location is fairly protected.
