I have a friend who used to live in the neighborhood in Bridgeton now completely de-housed by the airport. Anyway, I was just checking gmaps to see if this old "home" of sorts (old folks' home or crazy house) that we would get into was still there. (It's not.)
Anyway, I spotted some buildings at 38.765042,-90.41986 and was thinking I'd check 'em out. Anyone know the security situation around there? If I go in, is a swat team gonna roll up or is it okay to wander around a bit? |

That's just a small apartment complex and an abandoned pool. I posted photos of them around here somewhere..
I drove through there a couple years ago and found like 2 houses left, one of which was half burned down.
I never checked the other side of the highway, you might want to look over there.
But the cops do patrol there, so try to stay out of sight. |

| Then again, the other side of the highway looks empty. |

It was called Carrollton Subdivision.

Well there was only 2 houses left that I could see, this being one of them:
There were alot of these. I didn't bother to get out of my car to see what's past 'em.
The recreation area is what I saw from the highway:
The emptiness of the streets was fairly sad/spooky...
Speaking of 270, if you follow it to Illinois, there's an abandoned motel on the right hand side close to the Il border... |

So you are confirming that the place did exist and is not just a rumor? I wasn't sure if it existed or not. |

Yes, it definitely did exist. I'm pretty sure this was the location: 38.771528,-90.412738
It was pretty creepy, too. Wheel chairs and hospital beds in random places. Never went down in the cellar. We peeked down but the air stunk too bad. |

Haven't the foggiest.
That neighborhood was so much fun for a while. Your closest neighbor might have been a half block away. Houses that hadn't been torn down yet were just there to explore. When I went there we basically had the run of the place. Plus, they had a creepy abandoned crazy house. Kind of my ideal neighborhood, actually. |

It seems to be Carrollton.
An archive of information about this area and the demolition is located here:
| Quote: |
This place was once a subdivision called Carrollton, located in Bridgeton, MO. It was one of the first planned communities in the U.S. that made sure to include green space, parks, schools, churches, and a community center in its development. Lambert International Airport made a proposal to the city of St. Louis to expand beyond its boundaries and build a new runway. This was pushed because, at the time, St. Louis was a hub for TWA. Despite the fledgling airline industry, the cause for eminent domain was issued in the direction of Bridgeton, including much of the city and all of the Carrollton subdivision. Although fought hard by community residents who formed a group called, “The Bridgeton Air Defense” and a number of legal battles that stretched decades, Lambert ultimately won and started taking homes as early as 1992. 2,000 structures, 2,000 parcels of land have become or will be soon property of Lambert International.
For almost 5 years, every tree in our subdivision was tied with yellow ribbons to show solidarity against the large airport. This gesture was to demonstrate how we were being taken hostage. As a kid, I really thought somehow the little guys would win and we all would get to stay. To a kid, it didn’t make any sense for someone who didn’t want to move to be forced out of their home, and there were a LOT of people who did not want to move. As I got older, school became more important than little issues like bureaucracy, even if it meant my mom’s house at stake. By the time I was old enough to realize that the concrete was creeping in to the edge of the subdivision where we lived… it was too late to care. Or, so I thought, until last year. Watching my own house go down, I realized that the remaining homes needed to be documented too. So, for the past year, I have been watching and photographing what little remains of the original 2,000. As of today, October 9th, 2007… only 56 houses are left.

They have more pictures mapped on Flickr.
Bing still shows some houses there if you don't zoom in too much. Was the old folks' home/crazy house the one at Gist and Brampton?
There's also a park at
38.767954, -90.427040 - Patrick J. O'Connor Memorial Park, which is still listed on the city website. Does anyone know if that's still accessible? |

Carrollton was already named, but we appreciate the info.
I was asking if anybody knew what that old folk's home/crazy house was called.
And yeah, looking at it from bing, I'd say that must be it! |

Thanks . I'm very interested in historical architecture and urbex but I'm not really the adventurous type (nor is my car), so I have to settle for reading others' findings and poring over Google Maps/Bing. |
