Back in the day, in my early teens, I was given a turtle someone found. This turtle was like 3 years old and didn't have use of its back legs. We named it Spunky. Wishful thinking.
I had it for about a month and it still wasn't eating. I was getting worried, normally hunger strikes only go on for a week or two after they first go into captivity. Finally, I get the right kind of bug in front if it and he starts eating it. I immediately gather all the bugs I could find and he pigged out. Slowly but surely, he starts getting better. I'd move his back legs for him as he walked and finally he started getting the hang of it. He never did get the rhythm down-he'd push both legs out at the same time, but it was progress!
Everything was going great. But one day, I left my mother in charge of the turtles. We had two others at the time, Nino and Buddy. Nino was a brightly colored red/orange male and buddy was a less brightly colored/greenish yellow female. Well, My mom had left Spunky in a box in the sun. Nino and Buddy were left in a laundry basket in the front yard.
I wasn't aware of any of this. I attended a party that night at a person's house I didn't know. They said they found two turtles in their back yard earlier that day. This was several blocks away from my house. I didn't get to see the turtles but thought it odd, especially since it was in a typical subdivision.
When I got back home the next day, I found out that Spunky was dead. She forgot him in the box with no water or food all day. This may not have been a problem for healthy turtles but Spunky was a special case. Then I also learned that the other two had escaped. They would follow each other through the yard, but I never thought they'd follow each other far enough for that long to be both in that person's yard together.
That was one of the worst days, ever. I never forgave my mom. RIP Spunky. |

Damn, sad.
In high school, I took Hunters Ed (it was a blow off class, but fun). We went to the pond on campus to fish, and walking through the tall grass, someone says "Oh, look, a turtle."
The thing was literally the size of a quarter. How the hell do you just happen to see it, and not step on it, as you're walking though a field? |

I tried to read all of it but I guess I have selective reading habits and this is all I got.
