Chilocco Indian School

Post by HMndnproud »

This place is close to the Kansas line in Northern Oklahoma. It was an Indian Boarding School until the early 1980's, when it closed. After that, in the 1990's it was used by some group called Narconon, who rented it from the tribes that own it. Narconon was a Scientology based group. They wouldn't let anyone onto the campus. I don't think they rent it any more, but I am not certain.

The school consists of dormitories for boys and girls class room buildings and lots of other buildings. I have some pictures, that a friend of mine took. I drove up there to go and see, but the gate was locked and I wasn't going to get out and walk up there in broad daylight. Not knowing if the Scientology people were still around or not. From what I understand they are not extremely friendly. This was about 3 years ago.

If anyone is interested in the pictures I'd have to figure out how to get them on here. I have a scanner, but I only know how to scan things into Word.

Okay, I found a site that said that Narconon had moved from Chilocco around 2000, they bought a place from the Choctaw Nation, and moved their drug rehab there. I do not know if any one else has moved in since then. I do know that the Pawnee Nation is suposed to be building a Casino near there. I doubt if it is right where the school is. There is quite a bit of land up there. Hundreds of acres, I think. When in use as a boarding school it was open from the sometime in the 1880's until the 1980's.

Has anyone gained access to this place? We just went past there on Saturday and the gates are still there...locked. We had gone to the First Council Casino (next door) a few months back and they were having a concert. Security from the casino had the Indian School's gate open and parking people back there for the concert...(thinking back now...should have gone back there to "park"...just to see).

The gates are not too far from the road on Highway 77 south out of Arkansas City, Kansas...right before you get to the First Council Casino.

I found some information on the following website: http://www.chilocco.org/

In the past i was part of a group that had permission to visit this site. There are estimated 53 building still standing. The entire place is beautiful - Most of the buildings are in various stages of disrepair. Those that Narconon used are only slightly better off. There is a great theater, a swimming pool and lots of dorms. I'll try to remember to post pictures soon.
Everwhere i look you're all i see, just a fading F**king reminder of who i use to be...I just want something i can never have...

I went there a couple of weeks ago with psychosaw13. We went in from the north, we had to walk a bit, but it was very easy to get in that way. The place is kind of creepy, a real good example of life after people. There were overgrown sidewalks and streets with houses and garages. The houses still have beds and furniture in them, as do some of the buildings. Its basically a ghost town, but there are people on the property using it for something. We were almost spotted by a truck that was driving around and parked at one of the buildings that seem to be maintained. There are still many buildings completely unused on the property, but there are several that look maintained with mowed grass and electricity, and it would appear that they are only using the main buildings in the middle of the property. I think someone or multiple people may be living out there, it was hard to tell, but there is definately activity there. And some of the buildings are very dangerious, I almost fell through a rotting floor... We plan to go back in a month or so. I have many photo's, I'll put up some of them up later.

Yup, I'd like to add it was very dangerous in most of the buildings, Most second floor structures have rotting floors . If you attempt to go there pay close attention to where you are stepping. As Fiend stated part of the property is being used we just dont know for what. Most likly storage. There was only 1 sign on the north gate the stated No Tresspassing Govenment/Indian land.
The North road is treacherous but accessable with 4WD.
WE had to move several fallen trees with truck & by hand. I ended up getting a severe case of Poison ivy in the process.

A Small portion of the property was featured on

With pics taken by another photographer other than Fiend & I.

Here is a small preview of our pics.

My husband and I finally made it out to Chilloco last January. It took 4 wheel drive. A flat tire and cracked windshield later, there we were! Lol. I have a ton of pics, info and old maps of the place if anyone is interested.
