RE: My frickin' feet
Okay, It's been a while since high school science... so if it's too basic or too acidic, it eats you up either way?

anytime im curious about whether something is base or acid, ill just lick itWillard wrote:Alright, your first clue that Lime is a base should be from the bitter taste. If it were an acid it would have a sour taste. Now as far as the reaction it has with your feet, that means it's fairly basic and could eat through your skin given enough time.

And if it's extremely acidic, then your tongue will fry off.

For several months I worked at a limestone mill
complex. The lime shouldn't do much to your skin except dry it out.
Sometimes we would have to clean off piles of
limestone dust off beams to run conduit.
We would all look like Casper at the end of the day.

I think the lime that's used to "sweeten" the soil that farmers use has some additive chemicals to it so it doesn't become concrete or cement or what not. Regular lime dust is slightly basic but it's ph is something around 6 or 6.5. What makes lime dust bad in your shoes is it acts just like sand paper only worse. Imagin granes of sand only a lot smaller... that's lime dust. It can be very abbrasive if it's in your shoes or if it's in somewhere that's causing friction.

I don't think the lime we use on our feilds has anything added --and you are right it will harden like concret you can not spread it with a fertlizer buggy it has to be a Lime truck that is equiped with vibrators and a chain delivery or it clumps up and if you try to stock pile it that is ok except when it is time to load it is is like loading chunks of concret
It is kinds cool looking when you have it spread i had 4 tons per acre put out and after it was finished it looked like a snow storm had hit the trees and the fences and everything was white
Then when you disc it in ityou really need to have some kind of resprator
