I believe that Bourbon, Mo. was probably named for the county in Kentucky by the people who settled there because they were most likely from Bourbon County, Kentucky. Kind of like Rolla, Mo. was named for Raleigh, North Carolina, or Westphalia was named for the region of Westphalia in Germany or any number of other areas in Missouri named for places the settlers were from. However that doesn't explain some of the more weird names.CaveGirl wrote:Licking, MO and Anutt, MO. I wish they were next to each other on road signs.
Also, Bourbon, MO. Why name a town after an alcohol?
I will say that Halfway, Mo. was named because it is half way between Buffalo and Bolivar.
Also here's a funny one: Tin Cup, Colorado. It's a ghost town and yes, I've been there. Pretty neat to see.
