I used to be a Heat Lance specialist for a pavement maintenance company, represented by the generic photo below. A heat lance is a simple 2 to 1 contraption that has compressed air on one tube and propane on the other and they meet in the barrel. You adjust the streams independently. When you light em up, it produces a huge fireball, then you dial it in and the result is a jet effect. This is how you clean pavement cracks out, after the heat lance crew then comes the tar crew who then fills the cracks. Anyway, that was a fun job. I occasionally set people's lawns on fire and had to quickly stomp them out before it got out of control. Not as cool as a flamethrower but I got paid to shoot fire, so there.

Is a heat lance what roofers use to melt the tar for installing flat or low angle roofing materials?
