I've been there. There is a much better place on the north side of Oahu right next to the military base with even better views. Almost no one is there most of the time, but there are many waterfalls, mud slides, and a cave with Geological Survey markers in it. If you are brave, there are stairless paths to one of the highest points on the island. There's even some rock that supposedly was used for human sacrifice in some depression in the hillside accessible by wooden stairs, and there is an old abandoned WWII radio tower that Japanese planes flew over when they bombed Schofield Barracks. I have a few pictures that survived posted somewhere in the Outside the Ozarks forum. You'll probably need to start out going to the history museum on base, because it is only accessible from the base, but they are set up to let civilians view that museum anytime they want. PM me if you ever plan on going to Oahu, there are awesome places.

Another place if you can manage to talk someone into giving you permission is the tunnel on the south east side of the island. There's even cave access off of the ventilation shafts. The guy I know now works for the power company. I'm not sure if he can still get access, but if someone is actually near there, I can call him up to see. I won't be going back to Oahu for a long time. Don't sneak in. If they turn the ventilation system on, you can get sucked into a turbine.

There are tunnels north of Waikiki in the run down local part. They are pretty foul and full of trash though. They aren't that exciting.

Suzanne Vega: “The Mother of the MP3″?

Suzanne has been referred to as the “Mother of the MP3″ as it was her voice that was used as the model for Karlheinz Brandenburg’s [pictured at right] compression algorithm. From Business 2.0 Magazine:

“To create MP3, Brandenburg had to appreciate how the human ear perceives sound. A key assist in this effort came from folk singer Suzanne Vega. I was ready to fine-tune my compression algorithm, Brandenburg recalls. Somewhere down the corridor a radio was playing [Vega s song] Tom s Diner. I was electrified. I knew it would be nearly impossible to compress this warm a capella voice.

Because the song depends on very subtle nuances of Vega s inflection, the algorithm would have to be very, very good to select the most important parts of the sound file and discard the rest. So Brandenburg tested each refinement of his system with Tom s Diner. He wound up listening to the song thousands of times, and the result was a code that was heard around the world. When an MP3 player compresses music by anyone from Courtney Love to Kenny G, it is replicating the way that Brandenburg heard Suzanne Vega.”

Just watched a show called Myth Hunters that had an episode on the Lost Library of Ivan the Terrible. Damn that was cool. Googling this doesn't turn up a lot of information but this forum here has some info on it.

I don't know if any of the episodes are available online, but it's on netflix.
