Post Something Interesting
Re: Post Something Interesting
Really? Cause it sounds okay to me. Although, I think Malaria vaccinations are a better idea.

The only thing I hate more than mosquitoes are chiggers.
But.. what happens when this gets out of hand and we ain't got no mosquitoes? Bats eat them. They probably provide other functions that I'm not aware of in the global ecosystem.

I am confused how this is supposed to work though.
Edit: Oh I see, they have to inherit two copies of the genes to become sterile. That makes more sense.
How exactly do they plan to spread a gene that causes sterility using reproduction? I read the article, it talks about it working, it just doesn't explain how.The article wrote:In addition, the insects' reproductive organs are deformed, which means they can't lay eggs.
As more and more female mosquitoes inherit two copies of the modification, more and more become sterile.

You're skipping over a critical question.SubLunar wrote:But.. what happens when this gets out of hand and we ain't got no mosquitoes?
Do mosquito species interbreed?
If they don't then there's no real scientific way for it to kill all mosquitoes.
But, yes, killing off one or a handful of species of mosquito are bound to have some effect on the ecosystem. I just don't think it'll be a very large/notable effect except for rarer specialized cases. Such as if that mosquito species is the only food source for another animal or another animal eats all mosquitos, but those species of mosquito are the only ones around, or a plant needs those species to aid in reproduction or some other action critical to the plant's survival.

Dr. Ruth (the sex therapist) was a trained Israeli sniper in the late 1940's. She says she never killed anyone though.

RE: Post Something Interesting
I tried logging into my old primary photobucket this morning and realized I didn't know the password. I did a password reset and it sent to an email I didn't realize I had. I must've given it a bullshit email account when I set it up, that or I hadn't used the account in so long that microsoft deleted it.
Either way, when I went to sign in, Microsoft told me the account didn't exist. So I set it up and then finally reset my photobucket password.
Which means if someone else had tried doing it, they could have taken control of all my photobucket content. Woops.
I don't use photobucket anymore but leave the photos there mainly for historic purposes, since they were posted all over UO over the past decade.
