Post Something Interesting
Re: Post Something Interesting
I wonder if that house on 9th parked their camper along the street just so they wouldn't have to look at the funky Jesus diorama constantly.
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

I would suggest starting on the second to last paragraph on page 172 (also just page 8 of the pdf):
"When Ben M, Yates and sons told of their epic journey
into the Icebox in 1926, they speculated upon the
possibilities of entrapment should rains swell the under-
ground river and close off the low spot just 100 yards
inside the cave. This was the reality that faced Veita Jo
Hampton and three other cavers that cold weekend in March
of 1959 when rain did indeed trap them inside the cave."
...
Otherwise the entire section on Devil's Ice Box is worth a read. Btw, if anyone comes to Columbia and wants to explore it sometime, lmk.

wow that is OUT of place!SubLunar wrote:This is the owner of Cabela's house. Cabela's, the outdoor/hunting company.

They built an ugly piece of shit McMansion in the middle of a subdivision. You'd think they would be off on some ranch out in the great outdoors or something.
and I assume you mean the previous owner of Cabela's??

Always a bad idea to cave when it's raining or could rain. The Article wrote:Veita Jo and her three compnios had dared to enter the cavern on a rain-drizzling mornlng ln March of 1959.
A caving group I was in had the same kind of thing almost happen to us while we were exploring Sequiota cave in Springfield years ago. There's a part back by the split where the ceiling dips down closer to the water and you have to crouch under it. Unbeknownst to us, it started raining while we were inside. We had gone past the split to explore the right hand passage and when we got back we noticed the river was about 6" higher than before. We figured we probably needed to leave and when we got out, found that it was pouring down rain.
We literally could see the water rising while we were standing there deciding if we should leave. It made the choice pretty easy.

It's dead. It's just that it's floating vertically rather than horizontally and it's never sunk or gotten permanently stuck in all these years.lolabelle wrote:that's crazy. why hasn't it rooted yet?Nicotti wrote:It's not rooted, it's free floating.lolabelle wrote: so wait...this isn't rooted? In Baghead's article, found this: "wrote Luella Owen in 1898 in her classic study of Ozark caves. "BagHead727 wrote:http://caves.org/section/asha/issues/028.pdf
Which after a little online searching lead to this:
Cave Regions of the Ozarks and Black Hills by Luella Agnes Owen
Note: Fairy cave on p58 refers to Talking Rocks Cavern in Branson West, MO. Fairy cave was renamed to TRC around 1980.

NPCA.com wrote:How has a giant hemlock managed to float upright in Crater Lake for more than a hundred years?
The initial belief was that a landslide on the crater wall carried the Old Man into the lake, and rocks wedged in an expansive root structure stabilized its base. Such an explanation made sense, for at Spirit Lake near Mount St. Helens, hundreds of trees have been floating upright ever since the eruption in 1980. But these trees follow a typical pattern: They have a large root structure, float for a number of years, and eventually sink to the lake bottom. Why hasn’t the Old Man sunk? Why hasn’t he eroded? And how, despite having no significant root structure, does he stay balanced?
Ranger Dave Grimes leads credits Crater Lake’s clean, cold water for preserving the tree and the higher density of the submerged part for keeping it balanced. Based upon initial carbon dating, Scott Girdner, an aquatic biologist with the park, says the Old Man is at least 450 years old but he isn’t sure how long it’s been floating in the lake.
