IRC channel for UO?
IRC channel for UO?
This just came to my mind. I know a lot of this has happened to us, where we've ended up having an almost real time conversation on the board because we get email updates.
Well, WR have you ever considered a UO IRC channel? I would no doubt idle it.
What does everyone else think?

i say "meh"
because it's rare that more than five people are on at a time.
Posts and Replies are a lot different than free discussion chat......
uer has hundreds of members and nobody is ever on their chat

Well, I like the idea, but I kinda agree with David. I don't think we'd get enough people in there that it'd be worth the effort.
Of course, if it were open to non-registered members, there might be more people in there. But that'd mean messing with some kind of Java or Flash thing for guests to connect to the IRC server.
I don't know. I love IRC (bash.org is HILARIOUS), but I just don't think there'd ever be anyone in there.

Well, being that UER is situated for such a large amount of people over such a vast amount of space, it's more for explorers trying to find people to explore with. I guess it's kind of like the router of a network.
With UO though, it's a little more personal and more active with stuff that actually applies to us.
If we actually set up an IRC channel and pushed for people to idle it, I'm sure it would be worth it in the end.
That's my two cents.

Were you talking like an existing IRC network?
RE: IRC channel for UO?
Yeah, would we really need our own? I think a channel would suffice.

Yeah, I just wondered if you had like a specific one in mind.

I'm not really sure which network. You got any ideas?

Not exactly. I just know it'd have to be one that our Java client (or Flash or whatever we use) would always be able to connect to. And I'm not really IRC-savvy enough to know which group or server that would be.S1L3N7B0B wrote:I'm not really sure which network. You got any ideas?

RE: IRC channel for UO?
A little update on this. I found out sort of by accident that this is against Powweb's (our site host) terms of service anyway. They don't want you to run any kind of chat software like Java or Flash, or any PHP chat rooms, because apparently they use more server resources (at least that's what they say). You could still have like an unofficial room on an IRC server or something, but I wouldn't be able to install anything that you could connect to it through here.
RE: IRC channel for UO?
Would it be against terms of service if we simply linked to one? It takes up an insignifcant amount of resources to link to something, but do they have some kind of statement preventing that?

That'd be okay. As long as we're not running the software ourselves it's not against the TOS.S1L3N7B0B wrote:Would it be against terms of service if we simply linked to one? RE: IRC channel for UO?
OK, I'm mostly ready to set this thing up... What channels would we want?
I was thinking maybe make it similar grouping as the future regional board design?
