HL2 is an absolutely stunning game. If you haven't played either HL1 or HL2, do so. I've played through both on the hardest difficulty twice. Very enjoyable games.
I use a GeForce Ti4200 with a 1.8Ghz P4 and 512MB pc133 SDRAM. It works decent since HL2 works pretty well with older machines considering it's engine. Both the GeForce 6600 and Radeon 9600xt are great budget cards.
CS: S is pretty good, though it not really ready for competition in my opinion. I used to compete in cal-o in 1.6 (yeah I know, nothing big) but CS: S has a long way to go before all the bugs are worked out and its ready for serious play. Servers are popping up fast for it though.
