Portage, AK

Post by ucitygal »

Okay, so this is way out of the general area - but this is one of my favorite urb-ex type adventures. Along a highway in Alaska, you can spot two structures in the middle of what appears to be a marsh. When frozen, you can walk out onto the marsh and investigate what turns out to be the remains of the town of Portage, AK which sank in the Good Friday 1964 earthquake.

Nice pictures! Portage is a fun spot, did you get over to Whittier at all? There used to be some derelict trains parked near Portage as well.

Huh - I had no idea what those buildings actually were... neat.

Did make it to Whittier but didn't quite get the gumption to truly check out a true Urban Explore - the Bruckner Building. Google that. You'll drool over it...

I've camped in it, it's fun :-) Found a secret tunnel to the former power plant too!
