Well according to the artical that you tried to link to, this Mel Waters has been on the overnight show Coast to Coast, so I'm guessing that's how the truck driver heard about it...

That a hole can't be 15 miles deep. If there were a hole in the earth's crust near Yakima that was even 5 miles deep, you would likely have an andesitic volcano on your hands. Sounds like Mr. Waters has been partaking of the local liberty caps :P

Giving the benefit of the doubt that this isn't pure fabrication...he tested the hole with fishing line and some kind of weight. So say the hole is 100 feet deep and ends in an underground stream or river with enough current to provide a steady pull that would mimic gravity's effect on the weight....he feeds the line out into the current, operating under the illusion that the weight is still descending.
