Buried car in Tulsa

Post by OC_Subiewrench »

I was wondering if anyone had seen the unearthing of the buried 1957 Plymouth Belvedere in Tulsa on the 17th in person , or if anyone had actually seen the car up close or knows what became of it?

I didn't see it up close, but it was on the news and in the papers here. It was gross, I think it was a complete loss. I heard that Tulsa is going to be putting another car in the ground in November, not to come out for another 50 years. I hope they do a better job.

Here here , that generation Belvedere is one of my favourite classics , it broke my heart to see the one rusty pic I got from my local paper. I read they couldn't get it started and the gas ran right out of the rotted out gas tank.

I'm surprised they even tried to start it. The engine was supposedly just one big blob of rust.

yeah Roping,
it was a big concrete box buried under the sidewalk 50 years ago, wouldn't ya know it, she was full of water when they popped the top on it... There were some photos around early on in the unearthing that showed them running a couple of pumps to drain all the water out.

They even got Boyd Coddington himself to undertake the task.

They buried a Prowler in 1998 to be opened in 2048. This one was buried on Tulsa's 100 year birthday. Hopefully they had a better way of burying this one.

From Wikipedia...
In 1998, a Plymouth Prowler was sealed in a mausoleum as a time capsule in Tulsa, Oklahoma. While similar in concept to the Buried 1957 Plymouth Belvidere that formerly resided near the courthouse, the buried Prowler was sealed in Centennial Park in an above-ground vault and sealed with a plastic "box" instead of plastic sheets that covered the Belvidere. Experts believe the Prowler has a better chance of looking how it did when it was sealed when the time capsule is opened in 2048, whereupon it will be returned to DaimlerChrysler
