My university has microfilm of the Gazette going back to 1819. If you can give me some dates to look up I will find the articles, scan them, and post.

Also, sorry for being picky, but quit calling this thing a satellite. It's a satellite dish, the satellite is what it communicates, or used to communicate with.

I'd say about the Jan 1965 to Feb 1969 mark. Those are the 2 dates I've seen.

There's an abandoned swinging bridge a couple of miles from this site. If anybody wants directions to it I can provide them.

I grew up south of where this is and I've heard rumors of this structure, now I can finally go see it. Thanks for all the research already!

Punch in the coords into terraserver and you can find it but no good stallite photos BUT it does say
"Search Accuracy - This search location resolved to a discrete address."
So at one time is a sensitive facility.

What do you mean by good pics? Artistic? If so then no. :(

Here is "Early Bird" or Intelsat 1. That was the ground station dish for the downlink. Remember also (after reading the wiki) that this was the first commercial satellite-ground station link. Satellite communications was nearly non-existent until this. This was the very razors edge of communications, so it would be used in research as well.

Oh and the little white box thingee? was a cableway access or "pullbox".
The latter pic with the "drive unit" was probaly a positioner for LNB reflector polarization or off-axis tuning. Notice there was not much travel room on the "plate". Off-axis is my guess...

Update: The site was added to the National Registrar of Historic Places in 2017.
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.
