The first sight you went to is an old truck depo site. I don't remember if it was a loading dock, transfer station, or maint. facility. It is where the new Sam's Club is going in.
We've had a few nusicence fires out there recently.

Do you not think we could get permission to camp on some of the private land in that area?

You probably could get permission for camping on the private land. Of course, right now is deer season. You would have to convince the landowner your not going to go hunting.
I know the city does not allow any camping (or hunting) on/in any city property or parks by city ordinance.
