Chillicothe Prison

Post by SubLunar »

Disclaimer: I'm including very specific information here because this place is undergoing demolition. A month from now there may not be anything left. It's now or never.

Image

1: Empty, featureless buildings.

2: Medical area. Mostly empty. Notable feature includes dental chair.

3: Main prison buildings. Mostly empty. No iron cages or noteworthy architectural details.

4: Original school building. Most notable feature is the theater.

5: Admin building. Looks like it would have provided the best architectural details but was actively being scrapped at the time of my visit.

6: Outbuildings. Probably just boiler room and maintenance sheds. Didn't investigate because it was too exposed to the active salvage work being done at the time of my visit.

This place was a lot of work and not a lot of reward. The main prison buildings aren't very prison-like on the inside. Wooden doors and no old school prison vibes going on. It's a pain in the ass to access. There's a small, almost invisible hole in the fence and a gate that can be slipped under. But there are eyes on this place from almost every corner. And many cars that drove by were looking at it as they passed.

I learned that the contractor is just now starting salvage and demo work. They also work on Saturdays. I took a weekday off and luckily for me, they had the gate open. Unluckily for me, they were on site. I had to dodge several workers and stay silent as I got closer to their salvage operation.

All doors on all buildings are unlocked.

It probably won't be around a month from now.

Here's some pics. Did I mention it was a pain in the ass?

Wooden Prison doors? Seems kinda light on security.
More online investigation than onsite exploration these days.

It was a women's prison if that explains anything? And yeah I was totally disappointed by that revelation. The buildings look cool as hell from the outside. I had my hopes up for some old school prisony goodness on the inside..

Thanks. I actually got halfway through the whole place before I even took my camera out. I almost left to go revisit something else without taking any pics but I figured I'd take a few while I was there, since it is on the chopping block after all. Since there were people on site, I figured I'd save the exteriors until after i was back out of the property, so all exteriors are looking through the fence. I had already spent an hour hiding from them inside a closet earlier so I didn't want to push my luck..

lol. no. For young wimmins, originally (10-20). In 1981 it became an adult correctional facility. But still, for the ladies.

Made it out there today successfully. There was a guy in a pick-up truck driving around inside and the gate was open. Easy as heck getting in because of it but also tough to maneuver between buildings because the guy was everywhere. Had numerous close calls where I'd round the corner of a building and he'd be working on something. I'm surprised he didn't see me tbh.
