Abandoned bridges
Abandoned bridges
I put this in the Missouri forum because this site seems to be centered around Springfield, but it could just as easily have gone into the Arkansas forum, or the "Outside the Ozarks" forum. It's a site with a bunch of abandoned and closed bridges. Some of them are very cool.

This bridge would definitely be worth checking out:

Anybody know if it's still there?

RE: Abandoned bridges
That's a pretty cool site... I notice it didn't have the abandoned Y bridge over the James at Galena. That's an interesting bridge, and on the side of it in a column is some sort of small USGS facility... I think it might be to remotely measure water levels, but who knows? It's pretty cool, though.

RE: Abandoned bridges
That is an awsome site.. and yes I posted something about the Turner Staion Railroad bridge.
Also I've driven the streach of 19 between Winona and Salem and it's very beautiful.. I hope they keep the bridges near Round Spring on that streach open. The are very beautiful to see when you're aproaching them from the south end.

RE: Abandoned bridges
Hey, that's a cool bridge, wish I could drive across it.
RE: Abandoned bridges
Also I have a friend who lives in Galena. I'll ask her sometime about the bridge.

The bridge is still standing, I have been across it. Not recently, since they closed it. It is a very big deal among the older set in Stone County. The water monitoring device in the column can be checked at :

which is a useful site for planning canoe trips on rivers that can get a little too low or a little too high too float.

RE: Abandoned bridges
I stumbled onto his site about two years ago. I've visited many of the long metal brides in this area of SE Missouri. I flew over this one last week in my Ultralight.

I drove my truck over this one about a year ago.

I'm amazed it's still open,,,,,very rickety looking.

RE: Abandoned bridges
I am trying to find a bridge my parents showed me several years back. They called it "the old haunted bridge"... (Real original huh!).
It was somewhere north of Springfield between Glenstone and Kansas Expressway , maybe three or four miles out.
The bridge is still standing, but it was replaces by a new bridge about 100 feet to the east. You can see the old bridge from the road. It looked awesome but I can’t find my way back now.
I didn’t see it on that site either.

RE: Abandoned bridges
That sounds like the Albino Bridge. But it's hard to see from the road with all the trees and brush. So I may be wrong.
Anne has left the building.
Re: RE: Abandoned bridges
This is a different bridge. The Albino Bridge wasn't ever used for a public road. The bridge being talked about in this thread was used as a public bridge originally.Anne wrote:That sounds like the Albino Bridge. But it's hard to see from the road with all the trees and brush. So I may be wrong.

RE: Abandoned bridges
It travels parralell to the road, and can be seen plain as day. I can't remeber if a path or trail or dirt road or anything leads over to it.
and definatly not the "albino bridge"...
That is more of a drive way then a street. this was once the path of the street itself...
