Mindwaave and I dicked around in the woods this weekend, and found some okay things. We first went to Slaughter Sink, one of the biggest sinkholes in MO. It's about a quarter mile across and has some pretty steep vertical drops, one of which we were able to set up a rappel line on. Good times commenced.

Then we went to nearby Onyx Mountain Caverns, a former show cave that closed in 2006 because the old lady that owned it sold it to NFS when her hubby died, cuz she didn't want the added responsibility of running it herself. So instead of doing anything cool with the new acquisition of a show cave, replete with visitor's center, concrete path leading to the cave, etc, the NFS instead just stuck a big ass gate over the entrance and sealed it up indefinitely. Near this cave is nearby Saltpeter Cave, which we have yet to look for and find. Idk if it's gated or not. Here's a couple pics:

I was pleasantly surprised that no assclown teenagers had burnt down the visitor's center. And, although a couple windows were broken allowing entry, there was no graffiti or vandalism inside. Miraculous.

These are all I can get until I find the usb cable for my phone to extract photos from it. Mindwaave, feel free to add whatever pics you took.

What is the tunnel I see below for? And have ye been in it? I know the square is the base of the elevator shaft.

Looks like a storm drain for sure, but why they routed it through the foundation wall is beyond me. In google earth there's a grate that lines up with it, but there's been a lot of reconstruction of the south tower, front entrance and parking area, so idk if it still exists. Surely they didn't cover up every access point...

Time to investigate! When it's NOT cold as fuck!

Agreed.

Panic's pictures pretty much covered it. If you're super freakin skinny, you can squeeze through a small gap between iron and rock here.

Also, old soda machines are cool.

Stumbled upon this thread looking for urban exploration opportunities in Rolla. Would love to check some of this stuff out.

I actually visited this cave as a young child, since someone in our family owns land touching the cave. Neat place, would like to see it again sometime.

Mindwaave and I went out and explored some shit closer to Jerome last weekend.

We kicked off the day with a visit to John's modern cabins ca. 1931-1967 that sit along a defunct section of old Rt 66 currently being reclaimed by nature. What wikipedia doesn't tell you is that there was a murder in the dance hall! some asshole shot his wife there. Cue paranormal experts. I caught a lot of orbs in my pics, and they coulda been pollen or anything fucking else in the sunlight but hey that's reasonable and logic isn't fun!

Not my picture, but what they used to look like just a couple years ago (2009):

Then it was off to Stony Dell resort ruins, which you can read all about here. Built in the 30s, this resort sits right where I44 goes through. The spring fed pool is gone, but there are a few things left to explore.

A picture of the original site, the portion that remains today:

The stone arch on the left is being reclaimed by the woods:

Just to the right of the arch:

The store (just out of frame of the original photo)

The pipe for the artesian well that fed the swimming pool is still around somewhere pumping water out of the ground. We will return in the winter and look.

We also went to the ghost town of Arlington, which is now all private property. There's a bunch of houses there so we only stayed long enough to snap a quick pic of the one derelict piece of shit building there:

That's about the only decent shots I got with my cell phone. Mindwaave prolly has some much better ones what with his fancy fuckin hipster camera.
