While we were there, we got a chance to check out a new portion of the trail that was just opened up this past July. It led to the old engine house that was built in the 1890's for the purpose of repairing train engines and cars. The railroad company at the time was the Iron Mountain and Southern Railroad. By around 1902, there were 16 granite cars regularly hauling out red granite to the rest of the country.

Cool! I haven't been in forever. Need to take the kids up there.

I used to go there when I was a little kid and I haven't been back since. I know I loved the place though.

I never knew about the old engine house though, that's cool.

That area is pretty cool. Be sure to visit the civil war Fort at Irontown.

Cool... right before MoPac bought out the Iron Mountain, the Iron Mountain had put a rail into Springfield from Crain. They were eventually going to make a line going all the way to Jefferson City but it never happened. Actually the end of the line used to be by Messiah Mills (offically Model Mills)
