Going to a Big Cave Saturday July 25th In Conway

Post by Kit »

Will add pics soon so you can see what I am talking about.

Its in Conway so if people from St Louis would like to come down its not as far as Springfield.

Huge Cave.. *might* be part of Smittle or used to be. Its in the right spot anyways. My dad has some killer stories from being in there. Including almost losing a friend when he almost fell in a chimney.

Its full of clay. FULL OF CLAY. You will need caving equipment and a change of clothes. You will get wet and muddy. There is a lot of kick ass stuff to see. I will get pics moved here as well so you can see.

I know when I posted about it before a lot of people were interested and Its not often I can go but that weekend will work as long as it not rained a whole lot.

Let me know.

This cave looks amazing. I'm new to Missouri (we don't have much for caves in Michigan), what kind of gear is a necessity for a begginer in cave exploration? Brands and shops around STL would be amazing. Thanks.

the most important thing you'll need is a helmet and headlamp. check out REI (Brentwood by Whole Foods) and the Alpine Shop (on Manchester in Kirkwiood). you may also want to see if you can save $$ by ordering online. compare prices on Black Diamond and Petzel,or whatever else they have. you could also just use a biking helmet if you didn't want spend a bunch. not that i ever cave much..

Necessity: At least three light sources and extra batteries.
Helmet, too, I guess.

Nice to have: Knee pads, coveralls. There's more, but I'm blanking.

Thanks for the info, I've been searching online. Outside of clothing, protective gear and lights..I was curious if there was specialty gear that's a must have. I'd love to see this cave someday. I'd like to mention that everyone has been really helpful. UE's in Michigan (I admit I'm guilty too) are really cliquey. This has helped me open up. Although, I guess it's to my benefit as I don't have anything from around here to share yet.

Wouldn't go purchasing a lot of stuff until you figure out what you need. Usually caving is just a lot of crawling in mud and darkness.

Yeah, like I said not much for caves in Michigan. There are some pretty sweet mines in the upper peninsula though. I knew someone out there would tell me what I need.
